Babad identik dengan tempat yang masih “perawan” dan oleh karenanya bersifat wingit. Sebagaimana tanah Jawa, pada abad ke-2 Masehi bangsa Hindu menamainya yabadiu. Yaba artinya enjelai (bidadari, surga) dan diu artinya tanah, sehingga yabadiu artinya tanah surga. 27 Karena keperawanan dan keindahannya tersebut, tidak hanya bangsa manusia yang memperebutkannya, akan tetapi bangsa lelembut juga berkeinginan menguasainya sebagai tempat tinggal. Karena tempat yang terbaik adalah yang terbaik bagi dua golongan tersebut. Konon, sejak abad ke-17 Masehi, tanah Jawa sudah ditempati oleh Bangsa Kalang yang pandai menempa besi dan bertanam padi di ladang. Tapi hidup mereka masih berpindahpindah (nomaden), 28 oleh karenanya belum dapat dikatakan sebagai pembabad. Hal yang sama juga berlaku bagi bangsa Hindu yang hanya mendiami pinggiran-pinggiran pulau dengan kelompok kecil. Semua ini adalah tentang riwayat kehidupan orang-orang terdahulu. Dalam konteks “Babad Tempurejo”, semua pengertian di atas dapat digunakan. Babad Tempurejo berarti sejarah, riwayat, dan cerita yang turun temurun tentang Tempurejo. Babad Tempurejo juga dapat berarti membuka lahan baru dengan menebas dan merambah pepohonan, semak belukar, rerumputan untuk mendirikan suatu pemukiman dengan nama Tempurejo. Pengertian pertama berarti merujuk kepada hasil jadi yang sudah terdokumentasi lewat proses heuristis, sedangkan yang kedua merupakan aktualisasi dari refleksi peristiwa di masa silam. Di dalam buku ini, pengertian pertama dapat dirujukkan kepada bagian awal hingga akhir. Sedangkan pengertian kedua kepada bagian ke-6 sebagai core-nya. “Babad Tempurejo” ber-setting pra dan pascaperang Jawa (de Java Oorlog, 1825-1830). Ia bermula dari motivasi internal beberapa individu untuk mencari “suasana baru” dan “dunia masa depan” bagi mereka dan keturunannya dari “kebisingan politik” dan “teror kolonialisme”.
