Excerpt from Lincoln the Hoosier: Abraham Lincoln's Life in Indiana The purpose of this book is to prove that Abra ham Lincoln was a Hoosier. The work will stress Lincoln's environment during the formative period of his life - from the age of seven to twenty-one during which time he lived in Indiana. The author believes that he has proved that Lincoln had an ample opportunity to secure a liberal education by the time he became of age and that he did so. He also believes that he has set forth sufficient facts to Show that Lincoln was not surrounded by a cramped cultural environment, but that, on the con trary, he lived among men and women the intellec tual equals of any in the Old Northwest. Lincoln's blood and environment explain him. This work, then, is given over almost wholly to these two fac tors. It aims at completeness Since the author be lieves that he has brought together about all there is to be known of Lincoln's life in Indiana. Excerpt from Lincoln in Indiana Southern Indiana and southern Illinois, both having been very largely peopled from the South, it was not strange that there was a large element whose sympathies were favorable to the Southern Confederacy. But there were large numbers in both States, many of them friends and supporters of Judge Douglas, who were intensely loyal to the Union. Illinois, however, was more fortunate than was Indiana in one very important particular, In that General John A. Logan, a Democrat up to the fall of Fort Sumter and for some time thereafter, resided in that section of the State, and being loyal to the flag wielded a salutary influence over his fol lowers. Excerpt from Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln In the dawn of the 20th century, looking backward through the vista of time, I recall my first knowledge of Lincoln. Early in the forties, my father, then a resident of the state of Indiana, had correspondence with him pertaining to business of the anti - slavery cause, in which my father was a zealous worker; and previous to this Lincoln had declare-d his opposition to slavery and its extension, basing his opinion on facts experienced in the South where he had been reared. Thus I came to know something of his individual character and sterling qualities of mind and heart prior to meeting him. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Before 1860: Indiana Cabins; Excerpts From Newspapers and Other Sources The Thanksgiving and the Christmas seasons were the terminals of the most fascinating period of the year for the growing boy in America. The amazing stories of the Pilgrims braving the wild and turbulent ocean in their frail wind driven craft; the expressions of gratitude for survival; and eventually, the abundance of food from field and forest contributed to the wonderment of the harvest festival. When Thanksgiving was over Christmas could not be far behind, in fact it appears in this modern day as if December is trying to jostle November out of its rightful place in the calendar. Christmas in primitive America offered the occasion for telling the story of another marvelous journey, this one by land, in the midst of which a child was born in poor surroundings marked by a star. After rich gifts had been presented by learned messengers and angels had sung their praise with divine fervor, the infant was secretely hurried to another country for fear of a jealous king who would destroy the infant. These November and December pageants were high spots which tested the imagination of every child. So it was between Thanksgiving and Christmas, in his eighth year when the wonder days of youth are at their zenith, that Abraham Lincoln reached his Hoosier home site. He later described the arrival in verse: When first my father settled here 'twas then the frontier line The panther's scream filled night with fear and bears preyed on the swine. The primitive condition of the country in which his father chose to locate is further visualized by Abraham Lincoln in these words, He settled in an unbroken forest and the clearing away of the surplus wood was the great task ahead. The great seal of the state of Indiana portrays a pioneer with axe in hand attacking the virgin growth of timber.
