La miel de abejas sin aguijon Tetragonosca angustula, conocida como Yatei, se utiliza contra diferentes dolencias por sus propiedades medicinales. Debido al interes y comercializacion de esta miel, se la caracterizo microbiologica y fisicoquimicamente con el objeto de sugerir estandares para su control de calidad. Los resultados promedios obtenidos sobre 40 muestras mostraron que 95% de recuentos de Hongos y Levaduras y 10% de recuentos de mesofilos aerobios superaron los valores limites de la legislacion Europea para miel de Apis (100 y 10000UFC/g respectivamente). Los porcentajes de microorganismos evaluados fueron: Enterococos, 20%; Staphylococcus aureus, 18%; Bacillus spp, 32% y Clostridium spp.30%; ausencia de E.coli y Salmonella spp. Los parametros fisicoquimicos promedios fueron: pH, 4,2; acidez, 74,3meq/Kg; humedad, 24,3%; cenizas, 0,39g/%; azucares (g/100g): fructosa, 21,5; glucosa,15,5; maltosa, 1,1, y ausencia de sacarosa; sodio, 17,1mg/100g y potasio, 217,4mg/100g. Estos datos constituyen un aporte importante desde el punto de vista sanitario para su produccion y comercializacion"

Se ha demostrado con estudios científicos que la miel posee propiedades antiinflamatorias, cicatrizantes y antimicrobianas conocidas por diversas culturas desde tiempos antiguos, sin dejar de mencionar que la miel también se ha utilizado como un alimento funcional o líquido milagroso por todas las bondades que presenta. La miel de abeja sin aguijón representa todo un mundo misterioso, ya que al observar a las abejas tan pequeñas y frágiles no imaginamos todas las bondades que podemos obtener de ellas a través de la meliponicultura; actividad ancestral desarrollada de forma natural, para preservar la alimentación humana muchos años más sin afectar los ecosistemas donde se practica.

This book covers pot-pollen—the other product, besides honey, stored in cerumen pots by Meliponini. Critical assessment is given of stingless bee and pot-pollen biodiversity in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Topics addressed include historical biogeography, cultural knowledge, bee foraging behavior, pollination, ecological interactions, health applications, microbiology, the natural history of bee nests, and chemical, bioactive and individual plant components in stored pollen. Pot-pollen maintains the livelihoods of stingless bees and provides many interesting biological products that are just now beginning to be understood. The Meliponini have developed particular nesting biologies, uses of building materials, and an architecture for pollen storage. Environmental windows provide optimal temperature and availability of pollen sources for success in plant pollination and pollen storage. Palynological composition and pollen taxonomy are used to assess stingless honey bee pollination services. Pollen processing with microorganisms in the nest modifies chemical composition and bioactivity, and confers nutraceutical benefits to the honey and pollen widely relished by native people. Humans have always used stingless bees. Yet, sustainable meliponiculture (stingless bee-keeping) projects have so far lacked a treatise on pot-pollen, which experts provide in this transdisciplinary, groundbreaking volume.
