Der Beitrag skizziert die wechselhafte Geschichte der Erlebnispädagogik in Deutschland von der Wende zum 20. bis ins beginnende 21.Jahrhundert und beleuchtet ihre Traditionslinien sowie ihre zunehmende Relevanz in der Sozialen Arbeit und der professionellen Jugendhilfe seit Beginn der 1980er Jahre. Trotz einer vielfach formulierten Skepsis an ihren zivilisations- und kulturkritischen Färbungen, an ihrer linear-positivistischen Begründungsrhetorik und an begrifflich-systematischen Unschärfen konnte sich die Erlebnispädagogik als Praxiskonzept nachhaltig etablieren und dies, obwohl der Austausch mit den Erziehungswissenschaften und mit der Sozialpädagogik weiterhin nur unzureichend entwickelt ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden verschiedene theoretische Ansätze vorgestellt, die Erlebnispädagogik mit Vorstellungen zur Lebensweltorientierung, mit Konzepten zur Salutogenese und Gesundheitsförderung, mit Überlegungen zur Aneigungs- und Sozialraumdiskussion und mit der Bildungsdiskussion in der Jugendhilfe zu verknüpfen. Diese Ansätze legen eine Erweiterung des Begriffes hin zu einer Abenteuer- und Erlebnispädagogik nahe. Ein Ausblick umreißt Herausforderungen und Perspektiven und skizziert Entwicklungsbedarfe, die sich insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit Themenbereichen wie Inklusion, Früher Bildung und Professionalisierung stellen.
