For many of us, thinking about the future conjures up images of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: a post-apocalyptic dystopia stripped of nature. Richard Louv, author of the landmark bestseller Last Child in the Woods, urges us to change our vision of the future, suggesting that if we reconceive environmentalism and sustainability, they will evolve into a larger movement that will touch every part of society. This New Nature Movement taps into the restorative powers of the natural world to boost mental acuity and creativity; promote health and wellness; build smarter and more sustainable businesses, communities, and economies; and ultimately strengthen human bonds. Supported by groundbreaking research, anecdotal evidence, and compelling personal stories, Louv offers renewed optimism while challenging us to rethink the way we live.

- Mario Cucinella curated the Italian Pavilion 'Archipelago Italia' at the 16th Architectural Biennale of Venice in 2018 - Mario Cucinella Architects was founded in 1992, and is a world leader in crafting sustainable architectural solutions for a wide variety of building uses This book brings together a collection of recent projects and classic architectural designs by Mario Cucinella Architects, and explores the sensitive, creative, and sustainable solutions that architecture and nature can provide in answer to global challenges. The way forward is approached via constructive strategies of the past and from the plant world, looking at how man has adapted in every latitude, climate, and culture. Buildings of the past considered resources like wind, sun, rain, and local materials, sustainable strategies that are increasingly important today. Research in the plant world inspires buildings that can adapt to the climate and resonate with the environment. Each project featured here is accompanied by a wealth of illustrations and drawings, and an in-depth analysis that interprets all aspects of construction.

The worth of dialogue with people who come from other cultural traditions was the first important discovery of the ambulance drivers at the front. It led them to care for the wounded on all sides in the war and then to create university exchanges between France and the United States. The practice of intercultural dialogue is the first training experience that is offered today to the students who leave home and to the families who receive them in their homes as new children for long periods of time. As this story unfolds, it is perhaps the border that emerges as something to question – the political borders that the American Field Service ambulance drivers crossed in two world wars, and the cultural and ideological borders overcome by students, schools, and families that answered the call of AFS.

Environment And Food written by Colin Sage and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-07 with Science categories.

This timely book provides a thorough introduction to the inter-relationship of food and the environment. Its primary purpose is to bring to our attention the multiplicity of linkages and interconnections between what we eat and how this impacts on the earth’s resources. Having a better idea of the consequences of our food choices might encourage us to develop more sustainable practices of production and consumption in the decades ahead. Although human societies have, over time, brought under control a large proportion of the earth’s resources for the purpose of food production, we remain subject to the effective functioning of global ecosystem services. The author highlights the vital importance of these services and explains why we should be concerned about the depletion of freshwater resources, soil fertility decline and loss of biological diversity. The book also tackles some of the enormous challenges of our era: climate change – to which the agri-food system is both a major contributor and a vulnerable sector – and the prospect of significantly higher energy prices, arising from the peaking of oil and gas supplies which will reveal how dependent the food system has become upon cheap fossil fuels. Such challenges are likely to have significant implications for the long-term functioning of global supply chains and raise profound questions regarding the nutritional security of the world’s population. Taken together the book argues that a re-examination of the assumptions and practices underpinning the contemporary food system is urgently required. Environment and Food is a highly original, inter-disciplinary and accessible text that will be of interest to students and the wider public genuinely interested in and concerned by the state of the world’s food provisioning system. It is richly illustrated with figures and makes extensive use of boxes to highlight relevant examples.

Governing The Energy Transition written by Geert Verbong and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-29 with Business & Economics categories.

The Energy Transition, the inevitable shift away from cheap, centralized, largely fossil-based energy systems, is one of the core challenges of our time. This book provides a coherent and novel insight into the nature of this challenge and possible strategies to accelerate and guide such transitions. It brings together prominent European scholars and practitioners from the fields of energy transition research and governance to draw attention to the current complex dynamics in the energy domain, and offer elegant and provocative explanations for current crises and lock-ins. They identify multiple energy transition pathways that emerge and increasingly compete, and emphasize the need and possibilities for novel governance. By analysing the complexity of energy transition processes and the difficulties in shifting to sustainable pathways, this text questions the extent to which actually governing energy transitions is already reality, just an illusion, or a bare necessity.
