Alla luce sia di fenomeni urbani sempre più difficili da circoscrivere entro gli schematismi logico-verbali ai quali la storia ci aveva educato, sia di una terminologia diffusa in cui l’ampia reiterazione della locuzione Rigenerazione Urbana ne ha determinato sovente un depotenziamento degli obiettivi, il saggio si configura come uno studio di alcuni tra i più celebri interventi europei di rigenerazione provando a darne una lettura critica e cercando di stabilirne, attraverso un confronto teorico e operativo, i caratteri peculiari. La ricerca, al contempo, attribuendo al progetto dell’abitazione un ruolo “indispensabile” nei processi di Rigenerazione Urbana – e da qui il ritorno alla città compatta, intelligente e sostenibile – si sofferma, inoltre, sulla disgregazione tipologica e sulle nuove dimensioni dell’abitare contemporaneo intervenute a seguito delle mutazioni subite dalla società, vaticinate, ormai più di trent’anni or sono, da Alvin Toffler. In light of both urban phenomena increasingly difficult to circumscribe the schematic logical-verbal to whom the story had educated us both a common terminology in which the large recurrence of the phrase Urban Regeneration has often given a weakening of the objectives the essay takes the form of a study of some of the most famous European interventions of Urban Regeneration trying to give a critical reading and trying to establish, through a comparison of theoretical and operational, the peculiar characters. The research, at the same time, giving the project housing an indispensable role in the processes of Urban Regeneration – and hence the return to the compact city, smart and sustainable – focuses also on the disintegration of typological and new dimensions of contemporary occurred as a result of mutations suffered by the company vaticinate, now more than thirty years ago, by Alvin Toffler. Leonardo Garsia (Cassino 1981), si laurea in Architettura presso l’Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria con la docente Laura Thermes. Dottore di ricerca in Composizione Architettonica e Urbana, tutor prof. Gianfranco Neri, dal 2010 collabora all’attività didattica e di ricerca del DASTEC e poi del dArTe – dipartimento di Architettura e Territorio – presso il menzionato Ateneo. Attualmente è docente a contratto di Disegno geometrico e di Storia dell’Arte presso l’Istituto Empedocle e il Collegio Sant’Ignazio di Messina.

The city, born to be a place of meeting and exchange, has for several decades taken as a default model the strong citizen, man, adult and worker, thereby transforming it into a hostile space for the weakest: the elderly, the disabled, the poor and the children. The automobile, the toy of choice for the privileged citizen, is also taken to be the principal 'citizen' of the city, thus endangering the health, aesthetics and mobility of the rest of us. This book proposes a new philosophy of city governance that takes children as the default citizens, with the confidence that a city sensitive to the needs of childhood will be healthier for everybody. This work recovers elements of the 1989 Convention of the Rights of the Child that recognize the full citizenship of children to suggest two principle axioms for optimal city design: the participation of children in city governance and the restitution of their autonomy, which allows them to stay with their friends and play freely. Boys and girls, in this way, represent all those excluded from decisions and power. This book is primarily written for politicians and city managers so that they can take on board the ideas within. Yet it is also important for teachers and parents so that they can respect the rights provided in the convention. City of Children should be made available to students on teacher-training courses, and also to the children who are the book’s true protagonists. At present, more than two hundred cities in Spain, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Brazil and Costa Rica have joined this project. This book is a translation of “La città dei bambini” and was translated as part of the Bridging Language and Scholarship initiative. The English edition by Vernon Press follows previous editions of this important work in Italian and the four languages of the Spanish nation (Galego, Basque, Catalan and Castilian), French and Portuguese to make available for the first time this important work to a broader international audience.

The crisis of contemporary public space is a question of interest to all architects. The economic, social and cultural crisis, in particular affecting the entire European continent, is clearly and originally reflected in the public spaces of our cities, more and more of which are now considered “heritage”. Public space and the public realm, due to their original facets, are once again a theme of interest for architects, but also for philosophers, sociologist and anthropologists (J. Habermas, D. Innerarity, Z. Bauman, M. Augé), as complex “spaces” to be decomposed. Hence, a few questions: Does the analysis of public space and an approach to design, in a reality that considers a different concept of “public” than that of the pat century comport a new way of looking? A new urban-architectural nomenclature? An interdisciplinary approach to design? The general situation described in this publication, in various authors from different disciplinary backgrounds, clearly expresses the tangible need to provide (or provide once again) positive responses to different questions before proceeding with the design – or analysis – of contemporary public space.
