Excerpt from Aborigines of South America The lamented author of this work is well known to geographers as an eminent authority on South America, the author of an interesting paper on the inland seas of that continent in geological times, and of a very important one on its physical geography. He had since applied his great knowledge and powers of deduction and classification to the preparation of a work on the aborigines of South America. It remained incomplete at his death, but the finished part included all the Amazonian races and tribes south of the great river, those of the Gran Chacu, as well as the Araucanian, Pampas, and Patagonian Indians. Excerpt from The Indian Races of North and South America In describing the adventures and proceedings of the pioneers in the settlement and civilization of the Western Continent, the interesting nature of the narrative may have led the author, in some from the immediate obj ect of his attention, viz.: the manners, peculiari ties, and history of the aboriginal inhabitants. He trusts, however, that where this may appear to be the case, it will generally be found to have resulted from the inseparable manner in which the history of the natives and those who have supplanted them is interwoven. Understanding South America is a book written by author and world traveller Clayton Sedgwick Cooper. This title is intended to be an introduction for American audiences to the continent and people of South America. Understanding South America assumes a broad approach to examining South America. The author travelled the country interacting with the locals in many different countries and communities, and has constructed this book around tales of these travels. The ultimate purpose of the book is to reveal the tendencies and conditions of the lives of South American people. The book examines many different peoples, including chapters on Germans in South America, Peruvians, Cuzco and the modern aboriginal, Argentines, the men of Brazil, and many more topics. Some countries are explored in great depth, such as Brazil, while others receive only cursory mention. Illustrations are also included, which assist the author in contextualizing some of his writings. Understanding South America is a noble early attempt at profiling the continent of South America and the varied peoples that make up its population. While the author is not immune to the colonial attitudes that are so pervasive in works of this nature written in the early twentieth century, Cooper does his best to provide an honest evaluation of his experiences. The strength of the title is the author's handling of various cultures as their own distinct groups, and not painting the entire continent with a single brush. Readers interested in learning about the attitudes of Americans towards South America in the early twentieth century will surely find Understanding South America to be a fascinating read. The book is rich in historical context, and the narrative penned by Cooper is entertaining. This title is a worthwhile addition to the library of anybody interested in South American studies. Excerpt from Aborigines of the West Indies A neglected field of scientific research, yet lying adjacent to and between the two great continents of America, is that comprising the vast collection of islands known as the West Indies. Although containing the first islands discovered by Columbus, and including the seas first traversed by Spanish ships, in the New World, it was many years before the actual condition and population of those islands was made known to the civilized world. Even' now, less, per haps, is known respecting them than of many portions of lands considered as unexplored. N 0 longer ago than 1878, I had the pleasure of discovering some twenty species of birds, which had until that time rested in obscurity, unknown and undescribed, and of sending to the Unit d States the first collection of aboriginal implements used by the Caribs of the Lesser Antilles. The West Indies are divided, as is well known, into the Greater and Lesser Antilles, the former comprising the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Santo Domingo or Haiti, and Puerto Rico, to which we may add the Ms the latter, that crescent-shaped archipelago called the Caribbean Chain, connecting the larger islands with the continent of South America. These, again, are locally divided into Windward and Leeward, with reference to their situation respecting the prevailing trade-winds. Excerpt from A General History of North and South America: Including the Celebrated Work by Robertson, Continued by a Complete History of the United States, to the Present Time We may conclude, however, that all the early migrations of mankind were made by land. The ocean, which surrounds the habitable earth, as well as the various arms of the sea which separate one re gion from another, though destined to facilitate the communication between distant countries, seem, at first view, to be formed to check the progress of man, and to mark the bounds of that portion of the globe to which nature had confined him. It was long, we may believe, before men attempted to pass these formidable barriers, and became so skilful and adventurous as to trust themselves to the mercy of the winds and waves, or to quit their native shores in ouest of remote and unknown regions.
