There is a gap in the academic literature which addresses the strategies utilized by English Language Learners in order to persist in career or technical education. The current literature on academic persistence and retention focuses on barriers experienced by the student, the institution as a barrier to academic achievement, success strategies in general, and counseling as both a barrier and a success strategy. This book builds upon the existing knowledge base of student persistence by narrowing the focus to a specific population: African immigrants and refugees who come from war-torn or unstable nations and are enrolled in a post-secondary career and technical education program. Students enrolled at a technical college were interviewed to discover which strategies they are utilizing or have used in order to persist in their studies. Three categories of success strategies emerged: programs and services offered by the college, social networks, and motivators. These findings will assist college counselors, educators, and administrators to determine which programs and services can best assist at-risk and other non-traditional groups of students to persist in post-secondary education.

ABSTRACT: First-generation college students encounter unique challenges and obstacles and often have lower matriculation rates than continuing-generation college students. Factors influencing academic persistence among first-generation students include financial, emotional, academic, and social difficulties. A theoretical framework comprised of self-determination theory, causality orientation theory, and the theory of persistence guided the examination of academic persistence. A 99-item online survey instrument was administered to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at a comprehensive regional university located in the southeastern region of the United States during the fall 2015 semester. Results indicate an interrelationship exists between autonomy and academic integration for first generation college students. Academic integration for first-generation college students negatively correlated with mother's highest level of education. Interrelationships exists between relatedness and social integration, as well as hours spent working and social integration for first-generation college students. Academic and social integration are primary elements of academic persistence. Attending to the basic psychological needs of autonomy and relatedness will foster academic and social integration among firstgeneration college students.

As the retention rate of college freshmen increases, Tinto's (1993) model of academic persistence conceptualizes several dimensions of students' voluntary dropout. This study examined both personal and parental factors that may impact the academic persistence decisions of freshmen college students: 1) parental educational attainment; 2) parental valuing of education; 3) high school grade point average (GPA); 4) residential status (on- versus off-campus); 5) educational self-efficacy; 6) self-esteem; 7) personal valuing of education; 8) perceived academic preparation; and 9) academic expectations. The study sample consisted of 378 freshmen college students at a large southwestern university who were recruited from 23 sections of a 100-level class intended to promote academic success. The participants in this cross-sectional study were restricted to freshman level students and 18 and 19 years old in accordance with Erikson's (1968) Identity stage of psychosocial development. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that academic persistence decisions were predicted by residential status and self-beliefs, which consisted of: educational self-efficacy, self-esteem, personal valuing of education, perceived academic preparation, and academic expectations. Parental valuing of education was a significant predictor of academic persistence decisions until self-beliefs were added to construct the full model. Although self-beliefs were collectively the most powerful predictors of persistence decisions, accounting for 22.8% of the variance, examination of the beta weights revealed that self-esteem, educational self-efficacy, and personal valuing of education were the most powerful predictors, while academic expectations approached significance. Residential status was also a significant predictor and accounted for a small but significant variance (1.6%) in academic persistence decisions. A significant multivariate difference was found between students living on campus and those living off campus. Follow-up ANOVAs revealed differences in mother's education and in parental valuing of education. These findings suggest that researchers, counselors, and college policy-makers consider on-campus living variables as well as students' self-beliefs when considering academic persistence decisions in college freshmen.

Single mothers increasingly seek college degrees at community colleges in order to provide economic security for their families (Wei et al., 2009); however, they often face a number of barriers that prevent or disrupt their education (Cox & Ebbers, 2010; Smith, 2010). Campus services help students persist to degree completion, yet serving the population of single mothers can be particularly challenging for practitioners when confronted with students' numerous internal and external influences (Austin & McDermott, 2003). Single parents who do persist have an important story to share with practitioners and policy makers in higher education. This quantitative study explored the perceptions of the experience of Mattering as a motivator for persistence among single mothers in higher education. Mattering is defined as 'a personal belief, whether right or wrong, that we matter to someone else and this belief acts as a motivator' (Schlossberg, 1989, p. 3). This study explored Mattering by investigating the following research questions: 1. To what extent and in what manner can academic persistence be explained by the student's perception of Mattering? 2. What is the relationship between self-perceptions of Mattering and selected demographics? This research utilized a quantitative correlational design (Creswell, 2009). Participants (N = 53) included single mothers enrolled in a program at two community college sites (N = 2). An adaptation of The Mattering Scales for Adult Learners in Higher Education was used to measure the participant's self-perception of Mattering to their institution (Schlossberg, Lasalle, & Golec, 1990). Results indicated high alpha reliability for the data, but no significant relationships between a single mother's academic persistence and their perception of Mattering to the college emerged. Furthermore, while students' demographics indicated a range in diversity, their perception of Mattering to the college remained consistent. This research may inform community college practitioners regarding ways to help single mothers stay motivated in their quest for degree completion, which will ultimately influence a new generation of college students. The results may be significant in shaping policy, support services for similar programs, and contribute to the economic futures of single mother households

This phenomenological study explored academic persistence for 10 nontraditional students pursuing business degrees at for-profit universities in southern Georgia and northern Virginia. The literature review provides a theoretical framework based on Tinto's (1975) theory of persistence and Bandura's (1993) self-efficacy theory. Data was collected through a demographic survey, timeline of significant events, in- depth survey, and a letter of advice. Data analysis included identifying significant statements, utilizing participant feedback to create structural and textural descriptions and ultimately describing the participant essences of their experiences. The decision to pursue a degree themes that emerged were career progression, family security, transferability, and convenience. The academic integration themes were engagement, personal relations, and encouragement. The social integration themes were positive student experiences, confidence building, and positive team interactions. Finally, the characteristics of persistent student themes were self-efficacy and faith.
