Geschiedenis van de Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. Begonnen in 1908 als een 'winteravondcursus' heeft de Academie zich in een eeuw tijd ontwikkeld tot de multidisciplinaire masteropleiding van vandaag, die jaarlijks vele tientallen studenten voorbereidt op een loopbaan als architect, stedenbouwkundige of landschapsontwerper. Roemrijke episoden komen aan bod, zoals de verbondenheid in de jaren vijftig en zestig met de wereldberoemde Forum-beweging en het baanbrekende werk van Academiestudenten voor de stadsvernieuwing in de jaren zeventig. Aandacht wordt geschonken aan de verhouding tot het Nieuwe Bouwen in de jaren twintig en dertig, de identiteit van de opleiding in de vroege wederopbouwjaren en de omvang en de gevolgen van de studentenrevolte aan het eind van de jaren zestig. De ontwikkeling van het leerplan komt ter sprake en er worden verbanden gelegd met de vorming van het architectenberoep, de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling van Amsterdam en de veranderende bouwopgave.

The production of this book stems from two of the editors’ longstanding research interests: the representation of architecture in print media, and the complex identity of the second phase of modernism in architecture given the role it played in postwar reconstruction in Europe. While the history of postwar reconstruction has been increasingly well covered for most European countries, research investigating postwar architectural magazines and journals across Europe – their role in the discourse and production of the built environment and particularly their inter-relationship and differing conceptions of postwar architecture – is relatively undeveloped. Modernism and the Professional Architecture Journal sounds out this territory in a new collection of essays concerning the second phase of the reception and assimilation of modernism in architecture, as it was represented in professional architecture journals during the period of postwar reconstruction (1945–1968). Professional architecture journals are often seen as conduits of established facts and knowledge. The role mainstream publications play, however, in establishing ‘movements’, ‘trends’ or ‘debates’ tends to be undervalued. In the context of the complex undertaking of postwar reconstruction, the shortage of resources, political uncertainty and the biographical complexities of individual architects, the chapters on key European architecture journals collected here reveal how modernist architecture, and its discourse, was perceived and disseminated in different European countries.

In this book the concept of mobility is explored for the archaeology of the Amazonian and Caribbean region. As a result of technological and methodological progress in archaeology, mobility has become increasingly visible on the level of the individual. However, as a concept it does not seem to fit with current approaches in Amazonian archaeology, which favour a move away from viewing small mobile groups as models for the deeper past. Instead of ignoring such ethnographic tyrannies, in this book they are considered to be essential for arriving at a different past. Viewing archaeological mobility as the sum of movements of both people and objects, the empirical part of Amotopoan Trails focuses on Amotopo, a small contemporary Trio village in the interior of Suriname. The movements of the Amotopoans are tracked and positioned in a century of Trio dynamics, ultimately yielding a recent archaeology of Surinamese-Trio movements for the Sipaliwini River basin (1907-2008). Alongside the construction of this archaeology, novel mobility concepts are introduced. They provide the conceptual footholds which enable the envisioning of mobility at various temporal scales, from a decade up to a century, the sequence of which has remained a blind spot in Caribbean and Amazonian archaeology.
