One of the darkest events in Canadian history is replete with the drama of war, politics and untold human suffering. Starting in 1755, 10,000 people of French ancestry were expelled from their homes along Canada's east coast by a tyrannical British governor with the complicity of American sympathizers. While some Acadians returned home to try to evade capture and forge a living, others made their way to the Spanish colony of Louisiana, where they farmed and fished and began the vibrant "Cajun" culture that is renowned around the world. Award-winning author Dean Jobb has written a dramatic and compelling account of "Le grand derangement" -- the event that was immortalized in Longfellow's famous poem "Evangeline." Jobb brings a cast of characters to life so vividly that the reader is immediately captured by their stories. The richness of detail is remarkable. The quality of writing is cinematic. The year 2005 marks the 250th anniversary of the expulsion. This book is a bridge across the centuries for the descendants of a founding people of this nation, whose courage and resourcefulness still resonate in modern-day Acadie.

The name Acadia, which we now associate with a great tragedy of history and song, was first used by the French to distinguish the eastern or maritime part of New France from the western part, which began with the St Lawrence valley and was called Canada.

What it means to be a people without a nation is one of the more haunting problems of our times. In the twentieth century, this has been an immense issue for Jews, for the Romanies, and for African-Americans; it has been a question for Acadians for more than 350 years. In 1755, in retribution for their refusal to bear arms, all Acadians were deported from their homeland around the Bay of Fundy in what is today Canada's Maritime region. Ever since, they have worked hard to keep a sense of their identity as Acadians, no matter whether they lived in New Brunswick or Louisiana, Nova Scotia or Texas. Clive Doucet has wrestled with the question of Acadian identity since his childhood, when he spent some unforgettable summers with his paternal grandparents in an Acadian village in Nova Scotia and others with his maternal grandparents in London, England. In 1994, he joined with a quarter of a million other Acadians in their first ever reunion as a people, in New Brunswick, Canada. It inspired him to write "Notes from Exile, which is in part a charming story of his childhood holidays, a heartwarming account of "les Retrouvailles," and an eye-opening history of the Acadians, woven into a whole by a thoughtful, challenging consideration of what it means to be Acadian in a world without Acadie. "From the Hardcover edition.
