A comprehensive introduction to CDMA theory and application Code division multiple access (CDMA) communication is rapidly replacing time- and frequency-division methods as the cornerstone of wireless communication and mobile radio. Theory of Code Division Multiple Access Communication provides a lucid introduction and overview of CDMA concepts and methods for both the professional and the advanced student. Emphasizing the role CDMA has played in the development of wireless communication and cellular mobile radio systems, the author leads you through the basic concepts of mobile radio systems and considers the different principles of multiple access-time division, frequency division, and code division. He then analyzes three major CDMA systems-direct sequence (DS) CDMA systems, frequency hopped (FH) CDMA systems, and pulse position hopped (PPH) CDMA systems. Other topics covered include: * Spread spectrum (SS) technology * Forward error control coding * CDMA communication on fading channels * Pseudorandom signals * Information theory in relation to CDMA communication * CDMA cellular networks Complete with useful appendices providing analyses of the moments of CDMA system decision statistics, Theory of Code Division Multiple Access Communication is a ready reference for every engineer seeking an understanding of the history and concepts of this key communications technology.

Optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) communication network technology will play an important role in future optical networks, such as optical access and metropolitan area networks. OCDMA technology can also be applied to implement optical signal multiplexing and label switching on backbone networks. Optical Code Division Multiple Access Communication Networks - Theory and Applications introduces the code theory of OCDMA, the methods and technologies of OCDMA encoding and decoding, the theory and methods of analyzing OCDMA systems with various receiver models and realizing multiple-class services with different bit rates and QoS. In addition, OCDMA network architectures, protocols and applications are discussed in detail. The up-to-date theoretical and experimental results on OCDMA systems and networks are also reported. A large number of encoding/decoding examples and many analysis and simulation results of code and system performances are given. It is a valuable text and/or reference book for postgraduates majoring in telecommunication and photonics to obtain a well-knit theoretical foundation and for engineers in R&D and management of optical communications. Dr. Yin is an Associate Professor of the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University, China, and was a Visiting Research Fellow of Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at University of Southampton, UK. Dr. Richardson is a Professor for optical communications and Deputy Director of ORC at University of Southampton, UK, and is responsible for much of the ORC's fiber related activities.

It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Multiple Access Communications (MACOM) that was held in Barcelona during September 13–14, 2010. In 1961, Claude Shannon established the foundation for the discipline now known as “multi-user information theory” in his pioneering paper “Two-way Communication Channels,” and later Norman Abramson published his paper “The Aloha System—Another Alternative for Computer Communications” in 1970 which introduced the concept of multiple access using a shared common channel. Thereafter, for more than 40 years of study, numerous elegant theories and algorithms have been developed for multiple-access communications. During the 1980s and 1990s the evolution of multiple-access techniques p- ceeded in conjunction with the evolution of wireless networks. Novel multiple access techniques like code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) provided increased spectral - ?ciency, dynamicity and ?exibility in radio resource allocation with intrinsic anti-multipath and anti-interference features. In this ?rst decade of the 21st century,multiple-accesstechniques,derivedfromadvancedwirelesstransmission methodologiesbasedonthediversityconcept(e. g. ,MC-CDMA,MIMO-OFDMA and SC-FDMA), opened the road to a renewed idea of multiple access. Today multiple-access communications involve many challenging aspects not only l- ited (like in the past) to physical layer design. Medium access control (MAC) techniques play a crucial role in managing the radio resources that users will exploit to transmit their data streams. Recent developments in software radios and cognitive radios have led to a signi?cant impact also on spectrum m- agement and access paradigms.

A comprehensive discussion of multiple access protocols for cellular systems and the consideration of the specific constraints and capabilities of second and third generation systems regarding the multiple access protocols. Beginning by introducing the cellular concept and discussing second and third generation cellular communication systems, including the evolution from these systems to IP-based systems, the authors then identify the requirements for and problems related to multiple access. In accordance with ETSI and 3GPP standards, a split is made into basic multiple access schemes such as CDMA, TDMA and FDMA and multiple access protocols. The pros and cons of CDMA and TDMA for third generation systems are discussed as well as medium access in GSM, GPRS and UMTS, essentially based on R-ALOHA protocols in all these systems. Data access delay and voice dropping performance is assessed and the different UTRA modes are considered. * Provides an accessible text for individuals with little prior knowledge of cellular communication systems or multiple access protocols * Provides an overview of existing material on cellular communications, multiple access protocols and a combination of the two * Presents extensive research carried out by the authors including extended packet reservation multiple access protocols for TDMA, CDMA and hybrid CDMA/TDMA air interfaces, protocol enhancements and modelling of the physical layer A valuable reference resource for researchers and engineers in the field of cellular communications and packet-based communications, as well as postgraduate and research students in this rapidly evolving field.

Bing (satellite and hybrid communication networks, U. of Maryland) discusses the design and development of wireless access protocols, emphasizing how such protocols can efficiently support disparate classes of multimedia traffic. After introducing and surveying the evolution of wireless access protocols, he describes many important protocols that are deployed or experimented with in various broadband wireless environments, such as asynchronous transfer mode, satellite networks, mobile cellular and personal communications systems, local loops, and local-area and home networks. Seeking a broad audience ranging from novices to veterans who are undertaking research in the area, he does discuss engineering aspects but focuses on the physical understanding and keeps the mathematics to a minimum.
