Body And Time written by Bianca Maria Pirani and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-02 with Social Science categories.

Body and Time is an innovative and concise survey of penetrating essays, conceptualizing the body as a physiological system embedded in a social network. In its complex and multilayered structure, it is aligned to and overlaps with other related functions. Contributors to this publication are members of the International Sociological Association Research Committee 54 – ‘The Body in the Social Sciences’, and their contributions specifically refer to the RC54 Mid-Term Conference – ‘The Mobile Interface and Social Change’, held at ‘Sapienza’, University of Rome, 6 December, 2012. What distinguishes the architecture of the book is that, collectively, it constitutes a challenge to the digital media paradigm in which the body is treated simply as a two dimensional icon of space and time; a relatively ‘free form’ with all kinds of narratives generated by the multimedia. Order in sequence should, indeed, be the key phrase incorporating four incisive problems dealt with in the thirteen chapters forming the ‘body’ of the book: identity, temporality, hierarchy and territoriality. In short, the volume demonstrates how fundamentally different ways of experiencing time are also determined by the differing cultural use of bodily rhythms – a ‘two-sided narration’ namely, of space and time. Central to the understanding of this interdependence is the study of interpersonal synchronization – increasing knowledge through the investigation of how rhythm, music, chants, dance, prayer and other harmonizing practices support social integration. This book will attract wide interest, especially from students, researchers and academics in the social sciences, neurosociology, digital studies and further afield.

Between Reason and History examines the role of the idea of progress both in Ju¬rgen Habermas's critical social theory and in critical social theory in general. The reception to Habermas's magnum opus, The Theory of Communicative Action, has tended to downplay the theory of social evolution it contains, but there are no in-depth examinations of this aspect of Habermas's critical theory. This book fills this gap by providing a comprehensive and detailed examination of Habermas's theory of social evolution, its significance within the wider scope of his critical social theory, and the importance of a theoretical understanding of history for any adequate critical social theory.

Philosophical Genealogy written by Brian Lightbody and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Genealogy (Philosophy) categories.

Volume I, explored the three axes of the genealogical method: power, truth and the ethical. In addition, various ontological and epistemic problems pertaining to each of these axes were examined. In Volume II, these problems are now resolved. Volume II establishes what requisite ontological underpinnings are required in order to provide a successful, epistemic reconstruction of the genealogical method. Problems regarding the nature of the body, the relation between power and resistance as well as the justification of Nietzschean perspectivism, are now all clearly answered. It is shown that genealogy is a profound, fecund and, most importantly, coherent method of philosophical and historical investigation which may produce many new discoveries in the fields of ethics and moral inquiry provided it is correctly employed

Bring Me Men written by Aaron Belkin and has been published by Hurst Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with History categories.

The masculinity of those who serve in the American military would seem to be beyond reproach, yet it is full of contradictions. To become a warrior, one must renounce those things in life that are perceived to be unmasculine. Yet at the same time, the military has encouraged and even mandated warriors to do exactly the opposite. With the expansion of America's overseas ambitions after 1898, warriors have been compelled to cultivate aspects of themselves which under any other circumstances would seem unmasculine. The creation of a masculine armed force therefore has required a surprising degree of engagement with the unmasculine while, at the same time, requiring warriors to maintain a strict disavowal of those very same unmasculine things against which they define themselves. In Bring Me Men, Aaron Belkin explores these contradictions in great detail and shows that their invisibility has been central to the process of concealing American empire's nastiest warts. Maintaining the warrior's heroic image has involved displacing negative aspects of military masculinity's contradictions onto demonized outcasts, especially women, gay men and lesbians, and African Americans. Ironically, these scapegoats of military masculinity have not distanced themselves from the armed forces, but have stabilized the benign facade of empire as they sought to gain admittance to the community of warriors. By examining case studies that expose these contradictions-the phenomenon of male-on-male rape at the U.S. Naval Academy, for example, as well as historical and contemporary attitudes toward cleanliness and filth-Belkin utterly upends our understanding of the relationship between warrior masculinity and American empire and the fragile processes sustaining it.

Michel Foucault Personal Autonomy And Education written by J.D. Marshall and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Education categories.

This book is designed to serve two purposes. First it provides an introduction to the ideas and works of Michel Foucault. It should be particularly appropriate for education students for whom, in general, Foucault is a shadowy presence. Second, it provides a Foucault based critique of a central plank of Western liberal education, the notion of the autonomous individual or personal autonomy. There are several introductions to Foucault but they tend to be written from a particular theoretical position, or with a particular interest in Foucault's ideas and works. For example Smart (1986) and Poster (1984) exemplify the former, and Dreyfus and Rabinow (1983) the latter. There is no substantial work in education on Foucault, apart from Ball (1990), which is an edited collection of papers by educationalists. The writer started reading Foucault from a position in education which was in the liberal framework, somewhere between Dewey, Freire and Habermas, but with an interest in punishment, authority and power. The book is the outcome of several years of trying to introduce students in education to his ideas and works in an educationally relevant manner. But an introduction, on its own, cannot show this relevance to education. Unless his ideas are put to work, unless they are used as opposed to mentioned in some sphere or area of education, then they may be of little relevance.
