In all probability, the human instinct to exchange something in one's possession for something belonging to another, is responsible for the invention of some system of account-keeping. Wherever such exchange or barter required more than the mere handing over of one article in exchange for another, e.g., when it required an adjustment of valuations, a calculation was necessary to enable the carrying out of the exchange to the satisfaction of both parties.
