Globalization and a neo-liberal world order are impacting the global urban system, resulting in massive transformation of cities across the world. This transformation, which is currently the center of focus among sociologists, will continue as more and more city spaces are occupied in the wake of globalization. This book is a collection of essays written by some of the most famous theoreticians and academics in the area of urban studies on this transformation process of cities and its socio-economic ramifications. These essays analyze the signs of intense spatial crisis in metropolises, revealing the contradictory processes of integration and segmentation that characterize the critical nature of global city space. Crisis of urban space in such cities, the book argues, is essentially related to their placement in the world city system and the limitations in their globalocal networks. Restructuring spaces also leads to differentiated and contradictory processes, the book reveals, since not all segments of the population are affected equally. The process benefits only parts of society and, therefore, only parts of the city space. This book shows how Centre and Periphery, reflect the differentiation between global society and segmented localities, how these stand spatially anchored, creating a background of intense urban conflicts. This volume explores and exposes a divided framework in which globalization operates towards fragmentation and polarization; debunking the myth of homogenization. The essays reveal that cities and regions across the world get incorporated into this system, exhibiting characteristics that are more diverse and complex than ever before especially due to the increasingly contradictory relationship with their local resource and cultural base.

People around the world are confused and concerned. Is it a sign of strength or of weakness that the US has suddenly shifted from a politics of consensus to one of coercion on the world stage? What was really at stake in the war on Iraq? Was it all about oil and, if not, what else was involved? What role has a sagging economy played in pushing the US into foreign adventurism and what difference does it make that neo-conservatives rather than neo-liberals are now in power? What exactly is the relationship between US militarism abroad and domestic politics? These are the questions taken up in this compelling and original book. Closely argued but clearly written, 'The New Imperialism' builds a conceptual framework to expose the underlying forces at work behind these momentous shifts in US policies and politics. The compulsions behind the projection of US power on the world as a 'new imperialism' are here, for the first time, laid bare for all to see. This new paperback edition contains an Afterword written to coincide with the result of the 2004 American presidental election.

Accumulating Capital Today written by Marlène Benquet and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-30 with Business & Economics categories.

This book explores the renewal of forms of capital accumulation and the institutions that shape it. It focuses on three main sources of accumulation: the extraction of profit through labor and the commodification of nature, financial speculation and the ways in which profit is converted into wealth. It thus offers a new understanding of the economic and political logics of capital accumulation within capitalism in the 21st century. It shows the recomposition of the sources of profit, from the traditional mechanisms of labor exploitation to the contemporary logics of speculation and dispossession. Bringing together the work of scholars who study the social fabric of capitalist accumulation, Accumulating Capital Today goes beyond disciplinary frontiers to describe how capital is accumulating in a world threatened by social and environmental collapse. This book heralds the emergence of "accumulation studies" and will be of interest to researchers in sociology, anthropology, politics, political economy, geography and economics.

This book examines the case of a global gold mining company's activities in Colombia - from a new theoretical perspective: 'accumulation by dispossession through state-corporate harm.' By adding a harm perspective to the concept of state-corporate crime, and contextualizing it within the global process of accumulation by dispossession, the book studies the case of AngloGold Ashanti in Colombia, using the concepts of 'friction' and 'frontier' to understand the relevant interactions that make up this case. The aim is to answer: What is the nature of the harms resulting from the interaction between the multinational corporation AngloGold Ashanti and the Colombian state? And, furthermore, how can this phenomenon be explained? To answer these questions, author Laura Gutierrez Gomez provides an account of the origin of current mining policies and regulations in Colombia, followed by an analysis of AngloGold Ashanti's entry into Colombia and the way in which it acquired several mining titles. She discusses the corporation's gold mining project La Colosa, located in the Tolima region, and the power dynamics that rule this mining frontier. After giving account of the interactions and harms that take place in the above-mentioned situations, Gutierrez Gomez suggests that state-corporate harm, stemming from the interaction between AngloGold Ashanti and the Colombian state, is the means by which the process of accumulation by dispossession materializes, thereby giving a possible explanation to the phenomenon under discussion.

The book argues that an increasing corporatisation of agriculture in India that is enabled by its neoliberal State, in the name of ‘development’, is contributing towards deepening of inequality in the rural India. It says that Contract Farming (CF) acts as a conduit that enables the coming together of myriad production relations (mercantile, finance, productive) to sell agri-commodities to the capitalist peasant. It is an accumulation strategy that brings together various factions of domestic and foreign capital together. It shows that CF as an accumulation strategy is enabled by an active interventionist state and this neoliberal Indian state mediates the relation between the agri-capital and Indian peasantry. The book further analyzes contract farming as a part of the totality of the capitalist mode of production in context of developing countries with a large agrarian base--- asking three fundamental questions – what is CF, how and why is it done and what are the implications of it.

Accumulation In An African Periphery written by Issa G. Shivji and has been published by African Books Collective this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-31 with Africa categories.

The "Washington consensus" which ushered in neo-liberal policies in Africa is over. It was buried at the G20 meeting in London in early April, 2009. The world capitalist system is in shambles. The champions of capitalism in the global North are rewriting the rules of the game to save it. The crisis creates an opening for the global South, in particular Africa, to refuse to play the capitalist-imperialist game, whatever the rules. It is time to rethink and revisit the development direction and strategies on the continent. This is the central message of this intensely argued book. Issa Shivji demonstrates the need to go back to the basics of radical political economy and ask fundamental questions: who produces the society's surplus product, who appropriates and accumulates it and how is this done. What is the character of accumulation and what is the social agency of change? The book provides an alternative theoretical framework to help African researchers and intellectuals to understand their societies better and contribute towards changing them in the interest of the working people.

When journalists, developers, surf tourists, and conservation NGOs cast Papua New Guineans as living in a prior nature and prior culture, they devalue their knowledge and practice, facilitating their dispossession. Paige West's searing study reveals how a range of actors produce and reinforce inequalities in today's globalized world. She shows how racist rhetorics of representation underlie all uneven patterns of development and seeks a more robust understanding of the ideological work that capital requires for constant regeneration.

Set in the resource frontier of northeastern Turkey, Bulldozer Capitalism studies the rise and decline of an anti-dam/anti-displacement campaign and the political responses to other extractive projects that it helped to shape in its aftermath. The book shows that people can accommodate their own dispossession and displacement if they are directed to negotiate, invest in, and speculate on the destruction of their built environment and nature, and their material and immaterial bonds, wealth, and activities.
