A autora reconstrói a história da ideia de propriedade intelectual, desde a legislação aprovada em Veneza, em 1474, que pela primeira vez protegia o monopólio sobre a exploração de invenções, até as discussões recentes. Com capítulos como "A história da propriedade intelectual", "O predomínio da perspectiva utilitarista" e "O problema moral da tensão entre proteção e acesso", a autora refaz o percurso do que chama de "judicialização" da propriedade industrial, do direito autoral e da proteção de cultivares (seres vivos, como plantas medicinais). Como escreve Maria Caramez Carlotto, no livro: "O surgimento das tecnologias de informação e comunicação alterou radicalmente a forma como a humanidade produz e troca conteúdos. Isso marca a emergência de uma nova forma de produção de cultura, em que cada indivíduo torna-se um produtor cultural em potencial. (...) Por essa importância crescente e decisiva, as escolhas relativas à legislação de propriedade intelectual deveriam se dar da maneira mais democrática possível, envolvendo de forma efetiva a comunidade política formada pelo conjunto dos cidadãos e cidadãs. No entanto, o que observamos ao longo dos últimos 50 anos – período em que as leis de propriedade intelectual têm sofrido, no mundo todo, alterações profundas no sentido de seu fortalecimento – é o oposto disso". Considerando a importância da leitura no processo formativo dos indivíduos, o artigo analisa o acesso aos livros em Braille, sua materialidade, circulação, práticas e usos, disponíveis em uma biblioteca, para os sujeitos com deficiência visual. Para tanto, a pesquisa empírica foi desenvolvida em uma biblioteca pública, através da utilização de fontes primárias de coleta, como observação e entrevista, realizadas em dois momentos, nos anos 2002 e 2007, com o objetivo de comparar o acervo disponível à demanda de leitores e aos suportes materiais do livro em Braille nestes períodos. A análise foi desenvolvida tendo como interlocutor privilegiado a perspectiva de Roger Chartier. O estudo aponta o quanto os sujeitos com deficiência visual, em especial a pessoa cega, ainda têm o seu direito à leitura subjugado pela ausência de políticas públicas e, conseqüentemente, limitação do acervo, dificuldades de acesso ao livro e precariedade dos títulos disponibilizados.

People from outside of Brasília often dismiss Brazil’s capital as socially divided, boring, corrupt, and emotionally cold. Apparently its founders created not a vibrant capital, but a cultural wasteland. However, as Sophia Beal argues, Brasília’s contemporary artists are out to prove the skeptics wrong. These twenty-first-century artists are changing how people think about the city and animating its public spaces. They are recasting Brasília as a vibrant city of the arts in which cultural production affirms a creative right to the city. Various genres—prose, poetry, film, cultural journalism, music, photography, graffiti, street theater, and street dance—play a part. Brasília’s initial 1960s art was state-sanctioned, carried out mainly by privileged, white men. In contrast, the capital’s contemporary art is marked by its diversity, challenging norms about who has a voice within the Brasília art scene.
