Abstract: This thesis presents an experimental study on the feasibility of tracking personnel and vehicles through use of both passive acoustic and passive seismic sensors. This study is performed through a number of field data collections and data analyses. Field experiment data from acoustic microphone arrays were analyzed to determine the applicability of broadband array processing techniques for estimating the direction-of-arrival of vehicles, personnel and impulsive acoustic events in an outdoor urban environment. For these subjects, approximate detection ranges and bearing estimation errors were empirically evaluated. In addition, seismic array processing techniques were studied. First, the ground propagation velocity characteristics were studied using impulsive signal measurements and time-difference of arrival estimates. Second, localization experiments were performed using geophone arrays in both distributed and clustered geometries. The localization results were analyzed in terms of bias and standard deviation, and the impact of errors in the propagation velocity estimates over these metrics was also studied.

Abstract: In this thesis, personnel detection, direction-of-arrival estimation, and localization with unattended seismic ground sensors are studied through a combination of data collections, experimentation, and data analysis. In addition, direction-of-arrival estimation using seismic and acoustic sensors jointly is studied. A spectral-based approach that leverages the natural periodicity of human locomotion is tested for both range and detection probability. The results suggest that spectral-based detection is restricted to scenes with a limited number of personnel and that geology and environmental conditions have substantial effects on detection performance. For bearing estimation, joint processing using an acoustic array collocated with a geophone is considered. Footstep occurrences are detected with the seismic sensor, and bearings are estimated using the acoustic array at these detection times. Seismic- only methods that use a single tn-axis geophone are discussed as well. Accuracy probability and mean absolute error are used to characterize the performance of these estimators. Lastly, an investigation into seismic array processing is undertaken. Profiles of ground propagation characteristics are first determined from experiments of timedelay estimation and velocity estimation. Localization experiments are then conducted to quantify localization error.

Existing seismic and acoustic vehicle signature data have been examined for characteristics which will yield two tracking parameters: closest point of approach (CPA) and multi-range (MR). MR refers to a pair of times which correspond to two vehicle/sensor ranges of known ratio. Several signal characteristics were investigated for their utility as predicters of CPA and MR. Signal processing characteristics of peak and time amplitude ratios were found to be useful for CPA and MR identification respectively. A processor was developed to smooth the signal to an integration rate. The time between fixed-size integration segments becomes proportional to an average signal level. While other characteristics were found to produce good CPA and MR times at short ranges, only the integration process was suitable at long ranges (200 m). However, to obtain CPA and MR times sufficiently accurate for an existing tracking algorithm will require more developmental testing and optimization than could be provided within the limits of this study. Preliminary work was also conducted on an acoustic bearing measurement device. Simulation results demonstrated that bearing could be accurately determined using a short-based microphone array. Seismic and acoustic noise from moving tracked vehicles was used to determine the seismic to acoustic signal coupling ratio (SAR) in the ground. The seismic signal received on a geophone contains some energy that has propagated as seismic waves and some energy that couples from acoustic waves to seismic waves in the vicinity of the geophone. We use the frequency domain coherence between the microphone and geophone signals to determine when the seismic signal is predominantly due to acoustic to seismic wave coupling. In frequency bands where the microphone and geophone coherence is above 0.8 the ratio of the seismic ground particle velocity to sound pressure, SAR, can be determined with less than 2 dB of error. The method is applied to data from a summer experiment with grass ground cover and at two winter experiments with snow covered ground. At 100 Hz, the summer analysis yields a SAR of 1x10 -5 (M/S)/Pa. Also at 100 Hz, the two winter analyses yield SAR values of 0.1 and 1.0x10 -5 (M/S)/Pa. In the later result the SAR using blank pistol shots gives very close values. These results can be used to remove acoustic contamination from seismic signals. We also show a loose correlation between the SAR values and the shear strength of the ground.

Heavy vehicles, such as tanks or other armored vehicles, can typically be detected using seismic sensors and sensors to detect low-frequency engine noise; light vehicles are harder to detect, particularly in high noise areas. The objective of this research effort was to conduct studies in the detection of light vehicles using sensor and signal processing techniques developed for human detection by the University of Mississippi under the MURI grant W911NF-04-1-0190. In these studies, it was found that vehicle engines and tires generated broadband sound signals from low frequencies up to ultrasonic frequencies. Ultrasonic sound signals from moving light vehicles were detected in field tests using a narrow band ultrasonic microphone. The magnitude of these signals showed dependence on the vehicle type. This research shows promise for the extension of these technologies to detect both humans and light vehicles under field conditions.
