A very substantial fraction of the effort was devoted to improving the experimental facility. A partly automated hydrophone positioning system was installed in order to facilitate measurement of scattered power for a variety of transmitter and receiver locations. Improved hydrophone amplifiers now furnish the required signal to noise ratios for reliable measurements with receiver placement varying all the way from the forward-scatter to the back-scatter postion. A greatly improved waveheight probe will permit characterization of surface statistics at a level of detail not previously accessible. Such a level of detail appears to be essential to any effort to reconcile experiment with theory. The construction process is now largely complete and measurements are in progress. The first azimuthal surveys of scattered power have been carried out and are included in this report. It is clear from this limited data set that some key features of the scattering process (e.g. back scattered power level) are poorly predicted by existing theory. A major portion of this report is therefore devoted to a review of theoretical background. The standard analytical approaches are examined to see what changes in the usual assumptions might lead to results more compatible with experimental observations.

The results of an experimental investigation into the characteristics of acoustic energy reflected from rough, time-varying surfaces are presented. Theory pertinent to the study of acoustic scattering is also presented to form a predictive base for the experimental work. The experimentally derived amplitude, slope, spectral, and spatial correlation characteristics of the rough surfaces are presented. Measurement results are shown which describe the spatial distribution characteristics of energy scattered from the rough surfaces. Experiments performed to determine the modulation effects imposed on the reflected acoustic energy by the time-varying surfaces are also presented. For all the measurements, the effects on the scattered energy characteristics of shadowing and changes in acoustic frequency, grazing angle, and the direction of acoustic propagation relative to the wave motion are discussed. A statistical analysis using ensemble averages is made of reverberation data obtained from the wind-driven surface of a fresh water lake. To produce the reverberation, gated FM and cw pulses are transmitted to insonify the scattering surface. The center frequency of each transmitted signal is 110 kHz. Two pulse durations, of 0.1 msec and 1.0 msec, are used in the cw experiment. The bandwidth of the FM signals, whose pulse durations are 1.25 msec, is 9.6 kHz. The transmitter and receiver are located at essentially the same place (R at T); i.e., the operation is monostatic. In the cw experiment the grazing angle is 22 deg and in the FM experiment the grazing angle is 0 deg. (Author).

The scattering of acoustic waves from a randomly varying wind-driven water surface is known to introduce both time and frequency spreading of the received signal. The frequency spreading is thought to be related to surface statistics and water wave motion. Therefore, knowledge of this relation leads to the possibility of predicting surface statistics by analysis of the received acoustic signal. One important feature of the frequency spreading function is that the Doppler sidebands are not equal in magnitude on both sides of the carrier. Unequal sidebands are predicted if the acoustic source and receiver are not located at the same depths below the water surface and if the direction of the surface wave motion is not perpendicular to the vertical plane containing both the source and the receiver. Experimental results from a model tank operated under various wind conditions have verified the existence of unequal Doppler sidebands under these conditions. However, strong asymmetries in sidebands were also observed under conditions under which the previous theory would have predicted no asymmetries at all. For example, strong asymmetries have been observed in the crosswind direction. This research is to explain the asymmetries not predicted in previous theory but discovered under laboratory operations, and to predict other asymmetries not yet found in either the experimental or the theoretical phase.

The present study continues the investigation of the author embodied in NUSC Technical Document TD-78205. Here we are again concerned with underwater acoustic scattering from the random moving wind-wave surface of the ocean. In particular, we are concerned with high frequency O(5-20 kHz), small grazing angle configurations O(5-25), and near-surface as well as volume regimes which are bubble-free vis-a-vis surface effects. Our efforts here are specifically directed to the calculation of doppler shift an doppler spread produced by the wind-driven ocean surface. Included also is a summary of a more complete model of the soliton scattering mechanism originally postulated and described. This more complete model is based on recent work of Middleton and Mellen.

Underwater sound was scattered from a wind-agitated random rough model sea surface. The surface energy spectral density, the surface rms height, and the surface correlation function were measured. The mean square magnitude and probability distribution of the specularly scattered sound were measured for various angles of incidence between 35 degrees and grazing. The results are compared with the basic theories expressed by Eckart and Beckmann and shadowing corrections derived by Wagner. The frequency spectrum of the scattered sound was studied and found to contain doppler shifted components, contrary to theory which predicts no doppler shifting in the purely specular direction. A detailed analysis of the origin of this doppler shifting is presented, and it is shown that interaction between axial and off-axis radiation is the explanation of the observed frequency broadening. Storms and wind events at the surface of the ocean are known to generate noise through turbulence, water droplets, breaking surface waves, and the entrainment of air bubbles. With larger wind events, waves break at the surface introducing air bubbles into the upper ocean layer. These air bubbles oscillate and generate noise in accordance with their resonant frequency, but they also act as attenuators to incoming acoustic signals by absorbing, reflecting, and scattering sound waves. Presented in this paper is a model for the attenuation of acoustic signals in the frequency range of 2-100kHz due to air bubbles from wind speeds in the range of 5-75m/s. Using a model for the number of bubbles introduced into the water column for varying wind speeds, total attenuation was determined as a function of acoustic frequency and wind speed. It was found that total attenuation increases with both increasing frequency and increasing wind speeds, with a 100kHz signal being attenuated by 355dB for a wind speed of 75m/s. For the same wind speed, a 2kHz signal gets attenuated by roughly 44dB. A 2kHz signal at 5m/s winds however experiences no attenuation due to the bubble cloud, but a 100kHz signal experiences 40dB of attenuation at 5m/s winds. For future work regarding this model, sound generation of the bubbles in the ocean surface layer should be added to get the net total ambient noise for each frequency at certain wind speeds.

This Topics volume is devoted to a study of sound propagation in the ocean. The effect of the interior of the ocean on underwater sound is analogous to the effect of a lens on light. The oceanic lens is related, as in light propagation, to the index of refraction of the medium. The latter is giv~n by the ratio of the sound frequency to the speed of sound in water, typi ca lly about 1500 m s -1. It is the vari ation of the sound speed due to changing temperature, density, salinity, and pres sure in the complex ocean environment which creates the lens effect. Many oceanic processes such as currents, tides, eddies (circulating, translating regions of wa ter), and internal waves (the wave-like structure of the oceanic density variabil ity) contri bute in turn to the changes in sound speed'. The net effect of the ocean lens is to trap and guide sound waves in a channel created by the lens. The trapped sound can then propagate thousands of miles in this oceanic waveguide. In addition to the propagation in the interior of the ocean, sound can propagate into and back out of the ocean bottom as well as scatter from the ocean surface. Just as the sound produced by a loudspeaker in a room is affected by the walls of the room, so the ocean boundaries and the material properties below the ocean bottom are essential ingredients in the problem.
