The field of integrated- or guided-wave optics has experienced significant and continuous growth since its inception in the late 1960s. There has been a considerable increase in research and development activity in this field worldwide and some significant advances in the realization of working in tegrated optic devices and modules have been made in recent years. In fact, there have already been some commercial manufacturing and technical ap plications of such devices and modules. The guided-wave-acoustooptics involving Bragg interactions between guided optical waves and surface acoustic waves is one of the areas of in tegrated-optics that has reached some degree of scientific and technological maturity. This topical volume is devoted to an in-depth treatment of this emerging branch of science and technology. Presented in this volume are concise treatments on bulk-wave acoustooptics, guided-wave optics, and surface acoustic waves, and detailed studies of guided-wave acoustooptic Bragg diffraction in three promising material substrates, namely, LiNb0 , 3 ZnO/Si0 , and GaAs, the resulting wide band modulators and deflectors, 2 and applications. The chapters cover not only the basic principles and the oretical analysis, but also the design, fabrication, and measurement of the resulting devices and modules, and their applications.

Research was conducted on two different but related aspects of the manner in which acoustic waves can be used in the interaction with optical waves. The first aspect concerns the problem of scanning optical, or light, patterns with acoustic surface waves. The second aspect concerns the problem of optical display where certain optical-acoustic interactions are used to deflect an optical beam in a controlled fashion that is suitable for display. Section II of the report presents results of work on the scanning of optical patterns. Section III discusses the problems that are encountered with an acoustic two-dimensional scanning system. Section IV presents concepts which underlie the optical display system which incorporates both acoustic surface waves and optical guided waves.

New devices are described which are based on optical waveguides on lithium niobate crystals, using the material anisotropy, including couplers, electro-optic modulator and light multiplexer, and optical deflector and scanner using collinear acousto-optic interaction between surface acoustic waves and optical surface waves. Complete theory for the propagating modes and coupled modes is presented. A new type of waveguide is presented for use with surface acoustic wave devices for real-time direct scanning and Fourier transform scanning of optical images, which introduces no additional transmission loss over that for unguided propagation. Test pattern results demonstrate the ability of this type of waveguiding to increase the transverse resolution of such scanners, and good correlation between theoretical and experimental results is shown.

The development of lasers and laser technology has sharply intensified research on devices for controlling optical radiation. Acoustooptic devices rank among the most important of these control devices. This volume represents the systematic compilation of the theory of the acoustooptic effect and covers the design principles of the corresponding devices and their application settings. Also examined are the characteristics of the most promising acoustooptic materials for the visible and infrared ranges.

Elastic Waves In Solids Ii written by DANIEL ROYER and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-11-30 with Science categories.

Elastic waves possess some remarkable properties and have become ever more important to applications in fields such as telecommunications (signal processing), medicine (echography), and metallurgy (non-destructive testing). These volumes serve as a bridge between basic books on wave phenomena and more technically oriented books on specific applications of wave phenomena. The first volume studies the different mechanisms of propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media. The second volume describes the generation and applications of free and guided waves.
