International Reviews of Child Neurology Series No. 13 Given the tremendous advances in the last five years in the understanding of acquired neonatal brain injury and in the care of affected newborn infants, this book provides a timely review for the practising neurologist, neonatologist and pediatrician. The editors take a pragmatic approach, focusing on specific populations encountered regularly by the clinician. They begin by addressing aspects of fetal neurology and the interpretation of fetal imaging studies. They then follow a “bench to bedside” approach to acquired brain injury in the preterm and term newborn infant in the next chapters. The contributors, all internationally recognized clinician scientists, provide the clinician reader with a state-of-the art review in their area of expertise. The final section of the book address special populations and concerns, areas that are largely overlooked in existing neurology textbooks. Each of these areas has seen considerable advances in the last five years and is of increasing relevance to the neurologist and neonatologist clinician. The comprehensive nature of each section (from basic science to acute clinical care to outcomes) should appeal broadly to scientists and allied health professionals working in neonatal neurology. Readership Paediatric neurologists, neonatologists, neurologists and paediatricians, clinicians in child development, child health researchers and allied health professionals (in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychology). Trainees in these areas.

Now in its third edition, this is a comprehensive survey of fetal and neonatal brain injury arising from hypoxia, ischemia or other causes. The volume spans a broad range of areas from epidemiology and pathogenesis, through to clinical manifestations and obstetric care, and then on to diagnosis, long-term outcomes, and medico-legal aspects. An important theme running throughout is to highlight scientific and clinical advances that have a role to play in minimising risk, improving clinical care and outcomes.

Recent advances in the clinical management of at-risk pregnancy and care of the newborn have reduced morbidity and mortality among sick neonates, and improved our knowledge of factors that influence the risks of brain injury. In parallel, the refinement of imaging techniques has added to the ability of clinicians to define the etiology, timing and location of pathologic changes with diagnostic and prognostic relevance to the developing fetus and newborn infant. Abnormalities of brain growth, or injury to the developing brain can occur during pregnancy; during labor and delivery, hypoxia, acidosis and ischemia pose major risks to the fetus. Defined practices for the management of pregnancy and delivery, and evidence-based strategies for care in the newborn period are influencing outcome. However, newborn infants, especially those born prematurely, remain at risk from situations that can cause or worsen brain injury. The literature reviewed here explains the mechanisms and timing of injury, and the importance of hypoxia, ischemia, hypotension and infection; describes current diagnostic strategies, neuroimaging technologies and care entities available; and outlines approaches that can be used to prevent or mitigate brain injury. Some show particular promise, and all are relevant to lowering the incidence and severity of brain damage.

For a woman of reproductive age, any medical appointment is a pre-conception visit and an opportunity to address pre-existing conditions that affect pregnancy and the maternal-fetal dyad. However, many neurologic conditions are rarely seen in pregnancy, and limited experience and knowledge may prevent the team from developing a shared approach to these complex conditions during pregnancy. Neurological Diseases and Pregnancy: A Coordinated Care Model for Best Management brings together experts across the disciplines of maternal fetal medicine, neurology, obstetrics, family planning, genetics, anesthesia, psychiatry, neurosurgery, and lactation to provide a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive, protocol-driven guide on best care for patients with neurologic disease before, during and after pregnancy. Each chapter provides a detailed care map on each unique disorder, and discusses the use of neurological medications during pregnancy and in lactation. Through this multi-disciplinary approach clinicians can navigate the complexities of preconception and pregnancy care, and help to optimize outcomes for the mother-infant dyad. Beyond pregnancy care, this volume further serves as a resource on best care for the life-course of women affected by neurologic disease including pre-pregnancy planning, genetic counseling, contraception, and sexuality in neurologic disease, as well as post-partum depression and menopausal neurologic changes.

Traumatic Head Injury In Children written by Sarah H. Broman and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Medical categories.

Head trauma in children is a major public health problem. It is a leading cause of death, and it can result in a spectrum of difficulties involving cognition, academic achievement, and social interaction. Children are evolving organisms for whom a static conceptualization of outcome may cloud the effects of traumatic brain injury. This important book explores sources of unexplained variability in outcome by developmental stage. For clinicians, the volume will provide easy access into the mainstream of research on traumatic brain injury in children, its pathophysiology, treatment, and outcome. For scientists specializing in cognition and development, and for those in the basic neurosciences, the studies of traumatic brain injury discussed in this book offer a unique opportunity to relate brain structure to patterns of behavior. Modern neurodiagnostic techniques have created new possibilities for understanding the neurological basis of the diverse behavioral deficits shown by head-injured children. The contributors of this volume not only present detailed analyses of the present state of knowledge of the diverse determinants of outcome in children with head injury, but they also emphasize the gaps and limitations in our knowledge.

Management of Brain-Injured Children describes the epidemiology, assessment, and management of traumatic and non- traumatic brain injuries in children. Throughout, the emphasis is upon providing a multidisciplinary and integrated 'team' approach to understanding these problems. Each chapter has been written by specialists who have regularly worked with brain injured children, providing perspectives from neurologists, psychologists, a Hospital Play Specialist, a Social Worker, Speech and Language Therapist, Headteacher, physiotherapists, and finally, a parent's point of view. The book focuses in detail on the acute medical and nursing needs of the children, the types of problems and difficulties both they and their families encounter, and discusses how the child can be ultimately be returned to the community. Finally, recommendations for the prevention of such injuries are discussed. The book provides a comprehensive, and easily accessible guide for any specialists regularly, or occasionally required to deal with head injuries in children.
