Drawing on a Gramscian theoretical perspective and developing a systematic comparative approach, The Civic Foundations of Fascism in Europe challenges the received Tocquevillian consensus on authoritarianism by arguing that fascist regimes, just like mass democracies, depended on well-organised, rather than weak and atomised, civil societies. In making this argument the book focuses on three crucial cases of interwar authoritarianism: Italy, Spain and Romania, selected because they are all counterintuitive from the perspective of established explanations, while usefully demonstrating the range of fascist outcomes in interwar Europe. Civic Foundations argues that, in all three cases, fascism emerged because of the rapid development of voluntary associations, combined with weakly developed political parties among the dominant class, thus creating a crisis of hegemony. Riley then traces the specific form that this crisis took depending on the form of civil society developed (autonomous, as in Italy; elite-dominated, as in Spain; or state-dominated, as in Romania) in the nineteenth century.

La barbería de la Almedina. Los orígenes del socialismo almeriense, 1880-1903 pretende acercarse a la historia social de Almería en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. La llegada de las ideas socialistas y la lenta consolidación de la organización obrera en el espacio urbano de la capital constituyen su hilo conductor. Recoge el arraigo y la impronta anarquia entre los trabajadores de Adra y Berja y sitúa la presencia republicana en el mutualismo obrero, en los debates sobre la "cuestión social" y las sociedades de resistencia. En realidad las directrices socialistas de fortalecimiento de la organización, moderación y prudencia en las luchas económicas impregnaron la cultura política obrera de la Almería finisecular pues el anarquismo apenas tuvo presencia en la capital durante estos años.

Aquesta actuació implica que sigui un referent cooperatiu a Roses i a Catalunya, ja que aconseguí implicar en aquest camp persones i institucions diverses. Altrament, ha participat en la Fundació Roca i Galès, de Barcelona, entitat dedicada a l'estudi i divulgació del moviment cooperatiu. La voluntat de saber li ha comportat una assistència persistent i continuada en esdeveniments cooperatius arreu del món per discernir què representava l'economia social amb vista a millorar la societat i per saber quins eren els eixos d'encert i de fracàs. Part d'aquestes reflexions les ha reflectit en la revista Cooperació Catalana.
