Le début du chapitre 2 des Actes des Apôtres raconte la venue de l’Esprit Saint auprès des disciples de Jésus, puis auprès d’autres hommes pieux, réunis à Jérusalem lors de la fête juive de la Pentecôte. Elle est marquée par quelques phénomènes physiques (bruit violent venu du ciel, langues de feu) et surtout par la prise de parole des disciples « en d’autres langues ». C’est à ce thème précis du « parler en langues » que sont consacrées les études qui suivent. L’exégèse traditionnelle ne retient pas l’hypothèse de la glossolalie (paroles incompréhensibles dites sous inspiration) mais plutôt celle de la xénoglossie : les disciples semblent, miraculeusement, parler différentes langues. Le problème est de savoir si le miracle se produit chez les locuteurs (qui parlent donc ces langues étrangères) ou chez les auditeurs (qui comprennent la langue des disciples). L’ouvrage dresse un panorama sur l’exégèse contemporaine de ce texte biblique : il propose une étude précise de la structure du texte et établit plusieurs rapprochements avec des textes contemporains. Les Pères, tant grecs que latins, ont peu commenté les Actes mais ont fourni sur ce thème des réflexions d’une grande richesse dans leurs sermons. Le commentaire de Bède le Vénérable domine au Moyen Âge mais on trouve des considérations pleines d’intérêt dans plusieurs commenraires, du xiie au xive siècle. Chez les Réformateurs, l’apport de Martin Luther et celui de Jean Calvin sont examinés. Plusieurs exégètes du xviie siècle, catholiques (Estius, Cornelius a Lapide, Libert Froidmont) et réformés (Moyse Amyraut, Michel Le Faucheur), fournissent des considérations d’un réel intérêt. Ce volume est issu de la vingt-et-unième des « Journées bibliques » organisées par le Laboratoire d’Études des Monothéismes/Centre d’études patristiques, UMR 8584 (CNRS-EPHE Sciences religieuses-PSL-Sorbonne Université) et l’UR 4378, Faculté de théologie protestante (Université de Strasbourg).
