The goal of this study was to examine how female undergraduate's active and passive Instagram use patterns influenced their social comparison behaviors, self-esteem, and contingent self-worth. My research questions were based on the four propositions described by the Differential Susceptibility Media Effects Model (DSMM), which explained the relationships between one's individual differences, their media use, their psychological and physiological responses to media use, and their media effects (Valkenburg & Peter, 2013). This model and the previous research done the impact Instagram use has on young adult's psychological well-being led me to predict that passive Instagram use would have a larger impact on one's self-esteem and contingent self-worth when using their social comparison behaviors as a mediating variable (Stapleton, Luiz, & Chatwin, 2017; Jiang & Ngien, 2020). Female participants (N = 136) ages 18-23 took a survey measuring their active and passive Instagram use patterns, social comparison orientation, self-esteem, and contingent self-worth. Analyses revealed that social comparison behaviors were a significant mediator between one's passive Instagram use and their contingent self-worth. Additionally, one's feedback-seeking levels were found to moderate their social comparison behaviors and their contingent self-worth. Future researchers should consider investigating this topic through a longitudinal or experimental design to develop stronger correlations or potential causal relationships.

This paper collected both subjective and objective, either passive or active, Instagram use data, investigating how they relate to loneliness, life satisfaction, body satisfaction, and self-esteem among 79 young adults (ages 18 - 25). Social comparison theory was employed to build our theocratical grounds, and this work is first of its kind to include both self- reported data and social media back end data to understand how each relates to user well- being. Results showed that subjective passive Instagram use was positively associated with loneliness and depression, and objective passive Instagram use was negatively related to depression. Implications are discussed, such that when users were primed to think about their Instagram use, they might be primed to recall the posts inducing social comparison and jealousy.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,3, Berlin School of Economics and Law, language: English, abstract: This master thesis empirically assesses the impact of the fit between digital fitness influencers and promoted brands on attitudes and purchase intentions of Instagram users. The study identifies attitudes toward source – both source credibility and source trustworthiness, attitudes towards ads and attitudes towards brands as important constructs to measure the advertising impact on attitudes. Based on a review of the existing literature regarding digital influencers and the concept 'fit', an experiment with two conditions was conducted via independent online surveys. They were carried out to members of online fitness forums and communities and fitness groups on social network sites. Data collected from 109 respondents in survey A and 110 in survey B was analyzed and tested using unpaired 2-sided tests. The empirical study reveals the relevance of influencer-/brand fit. The results confirm that the impact on all tested constructs is significantly more positive for the test group exposed to the survey including a post of a digital fitness influencer with a high perceived influencer-/brand. The findings require further confirmation in other settings and industry sectors before they can be generalized, but offer helpful new insights to better allocate efforts and resources to effectively manage the collaboration with digital influencers. A high influencer-/brand fit serves as a key driver for advertising effectiveness of influencer marketing.

Social media platforms are increasingly becoming part of the everyday life of Americans. The increasing use of social media platforms has been parallel to the declining mental health of adolescents, and young adults causing scientists and the public alike to wonder if there is a link between these trends. The aim of this study was to explore how the self-regulation framework can enrich social media research by taking into account individual differences in goal pursuit, and conflict. In addition, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between screen time and mental health. Social media use, mental health, and self-regulation strategies were measured in a digital sample of young adults ages 18-29 (N=200). The results indicated that there were no significant relationships between anxiety, depression, negative affect, and Instagram screen time. There was, however, a significant relationship between mental health, and problematic Instagram use which depicted conflict between social media use and other goals. Results also suggested that the process model of self-control can be applied to self-regulatory strategies in relation to social media use. Situational strategies seem to be more effective at reducing Instagram use, as opposed to cognitive strategies. These findings clarify the current contradictory screen time literature, and expand the domains in which the process model has been examined. There are practical implications from these results. Namely that research about social media use and mental health should decentralize screen time as a key factor and further explore the role of goal pursuit and conflict in this domain.
