Bob McDonald, host of CBC Radio’s Quirks and Quarks, offers a personal and inspiring memoir of life-changing events in his early years through five decades in science journalism. Revered science reporter and radio host Bob McDonald has devoted a decades-long career to turning our attention away from everyday perspectives and outward to the vast, intricate wonders of our planet and universe. Now, in this revealing and captivating memoir, he looks within, offering an intimate view of the path that brought him from a blue-collar background to his long-standing role as Canada’s foremost explainer of all things scientific. It’s an engrossing and often jubilant story that allows McDonald to share powerful insights on overcoming fear of failure and tackling life-transforming challenges. Early on, he describes a childhood and youth plagued by difficulties in school that eventually convinced him to drop out of university. Yet, despite the academic obstacles, his love of science burned bright. Soon, through an innate stage sense and sheer enthusiasm, he landed a gig doing high-spirited demonstrations for the public at the Ontario Science Centre, which in turn led to self-produced TV spots. And as each hard-won, never-certain success built on the last, he arrived at the role that would make him a national figure: the witty, engaging, passionately curious host of the perennially popular CBC Radio show Quirks and Quarks, reporting from the frontiers of scientific exploration and rubbing elbows with such luminaries as Chris Hadfield, Buzz Aldrin and Stephen Hawking. Told with all of McDonald’s trademark pace and humour, Just Say Yes is bound to please, surprise and inspire his numerous fans in entirely new ways.

I've always been curious about what stories lay behind closed doors. Everyone has a story, but not everyone will let you in to hear it. When a career change came along late in my life, a door opened up, so to speak, giving me the opportunity to peer into some of those mysterious places. I became a sales representative for a major moving company. My job was to provide an estimate for people's impending moves. Everything they owned was laid before my eyes. I had the privilege to read their life story by simply going through their belongings. I was virtually given permission to invade their privacy. I feel very fortunate to have gained in these encounters, love, friendships, and admiration for people I would have never met on the street.

The Alexandra Sequence written by John Redmond and has been published by Carcanet Press Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-15 with Poetry categories.
In The Alexandra Sequence John Redmond views contemporary urban life through the suggestive prism of the mummers' play, a seasonal British folk-theatre staged in the streets and door-to-door. The book takes its title from an area of Liverpool, a city shaped by its recent history of trade and migration, still recovering after a long period of decline. Experiences of uprootedness and social precarity frame suburban lives that are 'livid with accident'. Drawing on the two central themes of the mummers' play – combat and resurrection – the poems reveal both dark and light parallels between the modern-day neighbourhood and medieval theatre: the carnivalesque zombie-drummers marching through a local park find their mirror-image in the daily disguises of life in a housing estate, or in the masked infractions of the 2011 England Riots. Mixing narrative and lyric, Redmond paints a neighbourhood of lively, unlikely references, from Juvenal to Tommy Cooper, Brueghel to indie rock. // 'Ingenious, maverick, brilliantly protean – welcome to the quicksilver world of John Redmond's new collection.' (David Morley)

In Space to Stay, the third book in the spell–binding The Saga of Rocket Science series, gives a thorough exposé of the U.S. Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. You will be there as Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee perish and get incinerated inside their locked Apollo 1 capsule; when Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise didn’t know if they would make it back alive aboard a freezing lunar module on Apollo 13; as Neil and Buzz experienced the euphoria of being the first humans to land on the Moon, while Mike Collins in lunar orbit and an anxious world looked on. You’ll see the same panoramic vistas of the lunar landscape and the beautiful blue marble we call Earth as the astronauts saw. You are taken inside the Challenger Space Shuttle as it caught fire and disintegrated in flight. What seven brave astronauts felt like as they plunged to their deaths in a basically intact crew cockpit. You’ll understand exactly what failed and how it failed on both the Challenger and the ill–fated Columbia space shuttles, and why another seven astronauts aboard the Columbia felt no pain despite their grisly annihilation during reentry.

This book explores how language is used to create characters in fictional television series. To do so, it draws on multiple case studies from the United States and Australia. Brought together in this book for the first time, these case studies constitute more than the sum of their parts. They highlight different aspects of televisual characterisation and showcase the use of different data, methods, and approaches in its analysis. Uniquely, the book takes a mixed-method approach and will thus not only appeal to corpus linguists but also researchers in sociolinguistics, stylistics, and pragmatics. All corpus linguistic techniques are clearly introduced and explained, and the book is thus accessible to both experienced researchers as well as novice researchers and students. It will be essential reading in linguistics, literature, stylistics, and media/television studies.
