"This book opens up a new field of discussion at the crossroads between contemporary art and critical tourism. As common ground for theoretical inquiry and artistic research, the notion of critical tourism asks us to question again our understanding of authenticity, the tourist gaze, the museification of landscape, the visual construction of place, post-romanticism, contemporary exoticism, site-specificity and global connectedness. The book specifically explores the role of the artist, and of the art institution, in the age of destination culture. How are individual and institutional practices changing in an era of hosting, hospitality, displacing and cultural nomadism? Based on the comparison between two very different but nonetheless similar landscapes-the Swiss Alps and the Baltic Dunes and Beaches-art historians, environmental historians, geographers, explorers, curators and artists address the relatively new field of critical tourism in a transdisciplinary context. Together they consider how to critically approach and understand seductive and remote landscapes, against the backdrop of global cultural tourism. The book is not only a critical account of discussions around the topics but it is also rich in visual materials, documents and descriptions of artistic interventions in these two touristic settings. This publication is the result of over a year of exchanges between ECAV-Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais in Sierre (Switzerland) and Nida Art Colony (NAC), which belongs to the Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania). The book reviews the concepts, residencies, exhibitions, workshops and the symposium that formed this exchange between 2012 to 2013, in the context of the research and residency programme "On Hosting and Displacing: Artistic Residencies and Cultural Production in Remote Contexts"." Summary: De tentoonstelling in het S.M.A.K. en de daarmee gepaard gaande publicatie onderzoeken hoe het concept van het pittoreske nog altijd (of opnieuw) van toepassing kan zijn voor artistieke interpretaties van het huidige landschap. Ten eerste is het opvallend dat veel kunstenaars gefascineerd zijn door het hybride hedendaagse landschap waarin de verschillen tussen centrum en periferie, tussen stad en platteland en tussen natuur en cultuur niet langer duidelijk gedefinieerd zijn. Volgens de Italiaanse stedenbouwkundige Mirko Zardini "laat alleen de sensibiliteit voor het pittoreske ons toe om dit territorium met nieuwe ogen te observeren: om de verschillen, de contrasten, de mengelingen en de nuances te begrijpen en te waarderen." Ten tweede is het hedendaagse natuurlijke landschap in grote mate en op globale schaal gekoloniseerd en gedomesticeerd met behulp van een wereldwijde verspreiding van beelden in de vorm van kunstwerken en allerhande mediale landschapsbeelden in film, televisie, toerisme, enzovoort.

"Net zoals zijn voorgangers kijkt ook de artistiek directeur van Sonsbeek '01, de Belgische curator Jan Hoet, naar de Sonsbeek-edities uit het verleden. In zijn inleiding voor de catalogus benadrukt Hoet het belang van continuïteit en traditie. Hij refereert in het bijzonder aan de in 2000 overleden Wim Beeren, die dertig jaar eerder de protagonist was van Sonsbeek '71: Sonsbeek buiten de perken. Terwijl Beeren, en ook Valerie Smith, kiezen voor een verspreiding van de kunstwerken, besluit Hoet om zich te beperken tot drie verschillende plaatsen. Vandaar de ondertitel 'LocusFocus'. De keuze valt op het voor Arnhem karakteristieke Park Sonsbeek (het culturele), de Eusebiuskerk (het historische) en het winkelcentrum Kronenburg (het sociaal-economische). Hoet schrijft in zijn inleiding: '[Ik heb] deze Sonsbeek-tentoonstelling heel bewust helder, overzichtelijk en boven alles leesbaar willen houden - een tastbare tentoonstelling ook, die iedereen, zo niet begrijpen, dan toch tenminste lezen kan.'Tijdens Sonsbeek '01 zijn uiteenlopende kunstwerken te zien van maar liefst vijfenzeventig kunstenaars. Bij deze selectie wordt gelet op mogelijke overeenkomsten tussen de locaties en de interesses en werkwijzen van de kunstenaars. Net zoals bij Sonsbeek '93 hebben ze de vrijheid om op hun eigen manier een dialoog aan te gaan met een plaats of ruimte. In de Eusebiuskerk is een aantal opvallende werken van vrouwelijke kunstenaars te zien. Zo ligt er in het midden van de kerk een enorme felroze jurk van de Amerikaanse kunstenares Beverly Semmes. Verder is er onder andere een gigantische muurschildering te zien van de Amerikaanse Jessica Diamond en een arbeidsintensief kunstwerk op de vloer, onder andere gemaakt van zaden, van de Italiaanse Bruna Esposito. Winkelcentrum Kronenburg aan de rand van Arnhem is misschien wel de meest gedurfde locatie. Het is namelijk een plek die ver af staat van de kunst; het staat in teken van het alledaagse, het consumeren. Dankzij de kunstwerken wordt het winkelcentrum op een andere manier beleefd. De kunst blijkt op zijn beurt kwetsbaar: een aantal kunstwerken worden vernield, waarvan sommige zelfs meerdere malen. Uiteindelijk werpt Sonsbeek '01: LocusFocus op geheel eigen wijze licht op de verhoudingen tussen kunst en de openbare ruimte in Arnhem"--Sonsbeek20-24.org.
