While the theories of the secular critics tend to reduce the poem's dynamism to an interior war between experience and faith, their analyses raise legitimate questions about the operation of discursive reasoning in the poem. However, secular theorists have failed to take into account "The Wreck's" being a prayer, which determines not only the poem's response to the questions of divine mercy and justice, but also it's 'subetext' about the limits and purpose of human language ... Prayer is more than a mere category of language; rather, all experience, and all language, has prayer as its height and end. More than simply formula, prayer is this participation of the soul in the adoration of Christ for the Father in the Spirit; in Catholic theology, this union of praise is the raison d'être of man's existence. As a result, rather than being the enemy of his reason, paryer reveals the truth of man's nature to himself ... In the suffering of the nuns, Hopkins finds the self-revelation of Christ. The manifestation of God amidst the chaos of the storm does not, contrary to human intuition, come primarlily by the strength and power of a natural disaster, but by the weakness of the five persecuted nuns who participate sacramentally in the agony of their Divine Master. Prayer enables the poet himself to enter more deeply into the suffering of the passengers and find meaning where none seems to exist. Rather than being a flight from reason, prayer opens the heart of the poet to know and receive the Word as He reveals himself in the nun's cry, and thus praise Him in communion with the Church.
