Masalah pandemic virus corona 2019 (Covid-19) yang muncul hampir di seluruh dunia sejak Maret 2020 dan menyerang Indonesia, hingga kini belum juga terselesaikan. Pandemic ini berdampak pada berbagai bidang kehidupan, termasuk di bidang pendidikan, antara lain hambatan dalam menentukan metode pembelajaran yang tepat, hambatan komunikasi antara orang tua dan guru, dan hambatan pemanfaatan teknologi dalam pembelajaran (Agustin et al., 2021). Akibatnya, kebijakan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia telah diberlakukan pada tahun 2020 Nomor 3 dan Surat Edaran Tahun 2020 Nomor 4. Kebijakan ini disebut kebijakan pembelajaran jarak jauh jaringan (online) atau kebijakan pem-belajaran online. Pembelajaran ini tidak dilakukan secara langsung di kelas, melainkan dengan bantuan perangkat elektronik seperti gadget, laptop, dan smartphone. Hal inilah yang melatarbelakangi masyarakat mengenal istilah “belajar dari rumah” atau “BDR”. Artinya, proses pembelajaran pertama di sekolah untuk pembelajaran di rumah berdampak signifikan terhadap proses pembelajaran.

Yet elsewhere, science is under siege. In the USA, Christian fundamentalists contest whether evolution should be taught in schools at all. And in Muslim countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Pakistan and Malaysia, a mere 15 per cent of those recently surveyed believed Darwin's theory to be 'true' or 'probably true'. This thoughtful and passionately argued book contends absolutely to the contrary: not only that evolutionary theory does not contradict core Muslim beliefs, but that many scholars, from Islam's golden age to the present, adopted a worldview that accepted evolution as a given. Guessoum suggests that the Islamic world, just like the Christian, needs to take scientific questions - 'quantum questions' - with the utmost seriousness if it is to recover its true heritage and integrity. Over the years, pragmatics - the study of the use and meaning of utterances to their situations - has become a more and more important branch of linguistics, as the inadequacies of a purely formalist, abstract approach to the study of language have become more evident. This book presents a rhetorical model of pragmatics: that is, a model which studies linguistic communication in terms of communicative goals and principles of 'good communicative behaviour'. In this respect, Geoffrey Leech argues for a rapprochement between linguistics and the traditional discipline of rhetoric. He does not reject the Chomskvan revolution of linguistics, but rather maintains that the language system in the abstract - i.e. the 'grammar' broadly in Chomsky's sense - must be studied in relation to a fully developed theory of language use. There is therefore a division of labour between grammar and rhetoric, or (in the study of meaning) between semantics and pragmatics. The book's main focus is thus on the development of a model of pragmatics within an overall functional model of language. In this it builds on the speech avct theory of Austin and Searle, and the theory of conversational implicature of Grice, but at the same time enlarges pragmatics to include politeness, irony, phatic communion, and other social principles of linguistic behaviour.
