Northeast India is home to many distinct communities and is an area of incredible ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity. This book explores the shared cultural heritage among the highland and river valley communities of Northeast India and mainland South East Asia, including South China, through oral traditions. It looks at these shared cultural traditions and suggests new ways of understanding and interpreting the heritage of Northeast India. Oral traditions often bring forward an unexpected twist in understanding historical and cultural links, and this volume explores this using local knowledge and innovative engagements with oral traditions in multiple ways, from folklore and language to performative traditions. The essays in this volume examine how communities build new meanings from old traditions, often as a recognition of the tension between conservation and creation, between individual interpretation and social consensus. They offer interesting parallels on how oral traditions behave in different socio-economic contexts, and also examine how oral traditions and memory interact with the digital world’s penetration in the remote areas. Penulis lahir di Tabanan, Bali, 9 November 1962. Pendidikan sekolah dasar hingga sekolah menengah atas dijalani di kampung halamannya. Pendidikan jenjang sarjana bidang Ilmu Hukum di Universitas Katolik Atmajaya Yogya¬karta, lulus tahun 1987. Menyelesaikan Program Studi Magister Hukum Program Hukum Bisnis pada PPS-PSMH Unila tahun 2001. Lulus dengan predikat Cumlaude Terbaik pada Program Doktor Ilmu Hukum Undip, Semarang, tahun 2006 dan Guru Besar Bidang Hukum Keperdataan/Hukum Bisnis Fakultas Hukum Universitas Lampung tahun 2008. Staf pengajar di Universitas Lampung, dengan jabatan Guru Besar Ilmu Hukum Perdata (Hukum Bisnis). Mengampu mata kuliah Hukum Adat, Etika Profesi Hukum, Antropologi Budaya, Metode Penelitian Hukum, dan Antro¬pologi Hukum/Sosiologi Hukum. Staf Pengajar Magister Ilmu Hukum Unila dan beberapa PTN/PTS bidang kajian Hukum Ekonomi. Pernah mengikuti Penataran dan Lokakarya Penulisan Buku Ajar/Buku Teks, baik tingkat Universitas Lampung maupun Depdiknas Dikti di Yogyakarta (2002) dan Lokakarya Penulisan Buku Ajar/Buku Teks DP3M Depdiknas Dikti (2003). Dalam pengembangan media pembelajaran, penulis juga berhasil menyusun Video Pembelajaran tentang Museum Negeri Lampung kerja sama LPEIU Due Project dan Pusat Sumber Belajar Unila tahun 1998. Ketekunan dan tekadnya membuahkan beberapa penelitian tentang Masya¬rakat Bali Transmigrasi di Lampung selain menulis di beberapa jurnal dan media massa nasional.

Pola kehidupan masyarakat adat Baduy yang unik berdampingan antara manusia dengan alam dan mempertahankan kearifan lokal membentuk masyarakat Baduy memiliki ketahanan tubuh yang kuat. Kekuatan masyarakat Baduy berada pada tradisi “pikukuh” yang selalu mereka taati dan lakukan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Kemudian tradisi pikukuh memberikan sebuah gambaran dalam mentransmisikan nilai-nilainya pada zaman modern ini, memahami setiap aktivitas sehari-hari masyarakat adat Baduy dilakukan dengan mengoptimalkan tubuhnya dan lingkungan seperti berjalan kaki tanpa kendaraan modern, bekerja di ladang dengan metode yang diturunkan oleh para leluhur mereka, makan dari apa yang mereka tanam dan melakukan ritual hampir semua melakukan aktivitas fisik. Kemudian sebagaimana yang menjadi kebiasaan di Suku Baduy yaitu mereka banyak ritual-ritual budaya yang dilakukan seperti ritual perladangan, perkawinan, kelahiran dan lain-lain. Kebanyakan ritual tersebut memiliki ragam aktivitas fisik yang memiliki makna tersendiri untuk kehidupan masyarakat Baduy. Bahkan menurut kepercayaan orang Baduy tentang berladang “ngahuma” adalah sebuah ibadah yang dilakukan setiap waktu dengan periode selama satu tahun dan jenis ritual yang berbeda-beda. Pada ritual perladangan ini menjadi daya tariknya adalah pola aktivitas fisik yang terstruktur seperti proses latihan atau pendidikan yaitu dari yang sederhana hingga yang kompleks atau dari latihan ringan hingga berat.
