Excerpt from Address to the People of Connecticut: Adopted at the State Convention, Held at Middletown, August 7, 1828 Let it not be said that because most of his predecessors were elected'the second time, that it will be a public censure on Mr. Adams, not to r'e-elect him. The evils and the dangers of the practice have not before been de veloped; an evil from a different source, was discovered at the electionof Mr. Jefl'erson, which came near defeating the will of the people, and a rem; edy was immediately applied, although it required an amendment of the constitution. Whenever an evil is discovered in the practice of govern; ment, the people should be bold and prompt to correct it. If the respect due to Mr. Adams, ' is to prevent the correction of a dangerous precedent, the same reason will apply to his successor, and with more force. So that the consequence will be, the evil can never be removed. Whilst public officers should be treated with justice, it ought not to be forgotten, that offices are not created for the incumbents, but for the public good; and it should be particulprly borne in mind, by..every freeman in the union, that no man has any chums to thepresidency, whatever may be hisitalents, and services - the incumbent no more than anyother'individual. It is deeply to be deprecated that there should be under any circumstances, a prevailin sentiment to dis regard principles, and even the public interest, from a mis ken or interested attachment to men. David Daggett (December 31, 1764 - April 12, 1851) was a U.S. senator, mayor of New Haven, Connecticut, Judge of the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors, and a founder of the Yale Law School. At the age of 16, he enrolled at Yale, entering the junior class two years early. He graduated with high honor in 1783 and then earned a master's degree. Upon receiving his master's degree, he received the unusual honor of having his commencement speech published. This marked the beginning of his reputation as a formidable orator.
