Explains the physics and chemistry of adhesion, surface preparation and testsPresents new strategies for formulating superior strong, weak and pressure-sensitive adhesivesIncludes access to unique electronic apps that enable numerical modeling of adhesives This technical bound book explains the basic principles of adhesion and shows how they are used to formulate and improve adhesives. The volume starts by laying out key physical and chemical concepts underlying adhesion and adhesives, including strong and weak bonds plus pressure-sensitive (PSA) across multiple polymer, metal and ceramic adherends. The ideas are expressed in clear and easily understood mathematical formulas that explain surface properties as well as "good" and "bad" adhesion, with the latter covering multiple types of adhesive failure. In this context, the book presents a detailed explanation of methods to predict, test and formulate adhesives and critically analyzes test results and traditionally accepted rules for adhesive formulation. The eBook version includes online access to a unique set of applied computer programs or "apps" that automate a wide range of adhesive formulas and enable readers to input their own data and numerically model adhesion properties in conjunction with, or prior to, chemical compounding and empirical testing. This volume constitutes a lucid and practical introduction to adhesion and adhesives appropriate for specialists at all levels.

Adhesives have been used for thousands of years, but until 100 years ago, the vast majority was from natural products such as bones, skins, fish, milk, and plants. Since about 1900, adhesives based on synthetic polymers have been introduced, and today, there are many industrial uses of adhesives and sealants. It is difficult to imagine a product—in the home, in industry, in transportation, or anywhere else for that matter—that does not use adhesives or sealants in some manner. The Handbook of Adhesion Technology is intended to be the definitive reference in the field of adhesion. Essential information is provided for all those concerned with the adhesion phenomenon. Adhesion is a phenomenon of interest in diverse scientific disciplines and of importance in a wide range of technologies. Therefore, this handbook includes the background science (physics, chemistry and materials science), engineering aspects of adhesion and industry specific applications. It is arranged in a user-friendly format with ten main sections: theory of adhesion, surface treatments, adhesive and sealant materials, testing of adhesive properties, joint design, durability, manufacture, quality control, applications and emerging areas. Each section contains about five chapters written by internationally renowned authors who are authorities in their fields. This book is intended to be a reference for people needing a quick, but authoritative, description of topics in the field of adhesion and the practical use of adhesives and sealants. Scientists and engineers of many different backgrounds who need to have an understanding of various aspects of adhesion technology will find it highly valuable. These will include those working in research or design, as well as others involved with marketing services. Graduate students in materials, processes and manufacturing will also want to consult it.

Cell Adhesion written by D.R. Colman and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-02-24 with Science categories.

One prerequisite for the evolution of multicellular organisms was the invention of mechanisms by which cells could adhere to one another. At some point in our history, dividing cells no longer went their separate protozoic ways in the primordial oceans, but instead found that by maintaining an association, by sticking together but not fusing, numerous evolutionary advantages became possible. The subsequent development of specialized tissues and organs depended on the elaboration of incredibly sophisticated, regulatable cell-to-cell adhesion mechanisms which are known to operate in biological processes as diverse as the growth of the embryo, the immune response, the establishment of connections between nerve cells, and arteriosclerosis, to name just a few. Although we can only guess at the ancestral mechanisms that fostered the first primitive intercellular unions, some one billion years ago, we now recognize contemporary molecular "themes" with presumably ancient origins that mediate cell-cell interactions. The chapters in this book serve as useful, thought-provoking, but not exhaustive, commentaries on contemporary topics within the broad field of cell adhesion. If the reader detects a slight tilt toward those adhesion molecules that function in the nervous system, this is merely a reflection of this editor's interests, biases, and of course, limitations.
