Current crack sealant specifications utilize a simple empirical bond test [ASTM D5329, "Standard Test Methods for Sealants and Fillers, Hot-Applied, for Joints and Cracks in Asphaltic and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements"] to measure a sealant's ability to adhere to concrete briquettes. However, no correlation exists between the results of this standard test and a sealant's field performance. To bridge the gap between sealants' fundamental properties and field performance, performance-based guidelines for the selection of hot-poured crack sealants have been developed. This paper proposes a new test procedure to help assess the capability of sealants to adhere to the sides of cracks in pavement. The proposed crack sealant adhesion direct tensile (CSADT) test procedure calls for the use of a direct tensile tester with modifications to the end pieces and the specimen holder. Sealant is confined between two aluminum pieces, which will move apart at 0.05 mm/s until failure occurs. Failure load and the displacement at failure are recorded and then used to assess the sealant's adhesion capability. A crack created on one side of the assembly during specimen preparation determines the initial failure location and ensures that the failure occurs at the interface and not within the sealant. The specimen preparation is designed to simulate sealant installation, and experimental conditions have been developed to represent crack openings during pavement contraction in cold weather. The repeatability of the suggested procedure was acceptable with an average coefficient of variation of 10.9 %. No significant difference existed between two operators or between two test setups.

Crack sealants are widely used in Texas to prevent water from entering into lower structural layers thereby extending pavement life. However, most current crack sealants have been reported to have a very short life mainly due to adhesive failures. Although adhesive failure is known to be the major failure mechanism very little attention has been paid to measuring this property in the laboratory. The main objective of this project was to develop a performance related adhesion test using TxDOTs Overlay Tester. In this report the crack sealant adhesion test protocol developed in year 1 of this study was finalized. The final test protocol includes a molding jig, a detailed sample preparation procedure, an adhesion test protocol, and criteria for interpreting the results. In this study 13 sealants (some of them have never been used in Texas) were evaluated following the proposed test protocol.

Adhesion Of Asphalt Mixtures written by Fauzan Mohd. Jakarni and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with categories.

Adhesion is defined as the molecular force of attraction in the area of contact between unlike bodies of adhesive materials and substrates that acts to hold the bodies together. In the context of asphalt mixtures, adhesion is used to refer to the amount of energy required to break the adhesive bond between bitumen (bitumen-filler mastic) and aggregates. Thus, adhesive failure can be considered as displacement of bitumen (bitumen-filler) mastic from aggregates surface, which might indicates low magnitude of adhesive bond strength. Adhesion is considered as one of the main fundamental properties of asphalt mixtures, which can be correlated with quality, performance and serviceability. However, despite its significance, research on adhesion of asphalt mixtures is limited and yet there is no established testing technique and procedure that can be used to quantify the adhesive bond strength between bitumen (bitumen-filler mastic) and aggregates. Only in the past few years, some efforts have been conducted in developing testing techniques and procedures for measuring the adhesive bond strength of bitumen and aggregates. However, the developed testing techniques and procedures have not enjoyed universal success and acceptance, and not yet established. Hence, emphasis of this study is focused on the development of laboratory adhesion test method that can be used to directly measure the adhesive bond strength between bitumen (bitumen-filler mastic) and aggregates. Also, adhesive bond strength and failure characteristics of various combinations of asphalt mixture materials over wide ranges of testing conditions were evaluated in order to validate the reliability and efficiency of the developed laboratory adhesion test method. This study was divided into three parts. In Part 1, a detailed review of literature on various testing techniques and procedures used to measure the adhesive bond strength in numerous areas of scientific literature and international standards was performed, in order to assess and thus to propose the most suitable and realistic approach for development of laboratory adhesion test method for asphalt mixtures. In Part 2, the proposed adhesion test method was subjected to evaluation, mainly based on trial and error experimental approach, in order to adapt and thus to develop the criteria and procedures for test setup and apparatus, specimen preparation, testing and data analysis. The established criteria and procedures were then used for detailed evaluation in Part 3, in order to quantify the test results of various combinations of asphalt mixture materials (i.e. bitumen (bitumen-filler mastic) and aggregates) over wide ranges of thicknesses of adhesive layer of bitumen, aspect ratio of specimens, testing conditions (i.e. deformation rates and test temperatures) and conditioning procedures (dry and wet conditionings). Results of the study were subjected to comparative analysis in order to determine the effect of various variables and parameters on the test results, to propose suitable testing conditions and to validate the reliability and efficiency of the laboratory adhesion test method. Upon completion of the study, a draft protocol was developed as guiding principles in conducting the laboratory adhesion test method.

A New Laboratory Evaluation Method For The Adhesive Performance Of Crack Sealants written by Xiaodi Hu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Adhesive performance categories.

Crack sealing is a practice used for routine and preventive maintenance as part of a pavement's preservation strategy. However, crack sealant failures are common in Texas, particularly within the first 3 years of application (or service life). The major causes of sealant failures can be classified under two categories: Adhesion failure and cohesion failure. Although both failures can lead to a significant reduction in the service life of a pavement structure, adhesive failure is in most cases the dominant failure type. Several laboratory tests such as rotational viscosity, penetration, softening point, ductility, and bond tests are currently used to evaluate the properties of crack sealants. Among these tests, the bond test is specifically used to evaluate the adhesive failure of crack sealants and the procedure of the bond test is well documented in ASTM D5329-07. However, the bond test often takes several days to complete, and the pass/fail criterion is determined through visual observation, which is a very subjective process. Furthermore, the correlation between the bond test and adhesive failure performance of crack sealants in the field was found to be either weak or non-existent. In an attempt to minimize these problems, a simple, fast, and adhesive performance-related laboratory test method is developed in this paper to ensure the proper selection of a sealant for a given project.
