Only half of entering college students manage to finish their degree in a 5 year period, and of the remaining half, 37% drop out altogether, suggesting that college students are at risk for failure to graduate on time or graduate at all. Additionally, the freshman year has been found to be critical in reducing attrition rates in subsequent years, and successful adjustment to college during the freshman year can significantly influence the entire undergraduate experience. The current work investigates how the parent-adolescent relationship and other supportive relationships are related to the academic, social, and personal-emotional expectations of adjustment and actual adjustment to college during the freshman year. The findings suggested that supportive relationships with parents may boost college students' adjustment, and this was true even for students who moved away from home. Furthermore, the findings had implications for the students living arrangements, suggesting differences between students who live in the dorms and students who commute to school. The findings of the current work are important for entering college students, their parents and other supportive figures in the students' environment. Moreover, the book provides important information to educators and university officials to ensure students' successful adjustment to college.

"College students' ability to adjust to the collegiate environment, new social demands, and rigorous academic requirements are all constructs often evaluated for college students in research studies. First-year female college students experience greater emotional stress that impacts their ability to adjust to college. Few studies have evaluated the benefits of personal growth groups and their effect, if any, on college adjustment. The present study aims to examine the possible role of personal growth groups regarding adjustment to college, and to uncover the relationship between personal growth groups for female freshmen students and their unique challenges and adjustment. This study also aims to determine whether personal growth groups would be related to improvements in not only college adjustment, but also in self-efficacy and social connectedness. Existing research had not adequately explored personal growth groups as a possible intervention option to aid in student adjustment to college. This study demonstrated that students who participated in personal growth groups had significant improvement in adjustment to college. In addition to improved levels of college adjustment, this study contains empirical evidence that personal growth groups can also aid in improvement on self-efficacy and social connectedness"--Page 7.

College Student Psychological Adjustment: Theory, Methods, and Statistical Trends introduces the reader to the college adjustment process, highlighting the many challenges facing college students today. The four chapters review recent trends in college attendance and mental and physical health problems of college students, classic and contemporary theories of college student development (such as Chickering’s seven vectors of development), and techniques for studying student adjustment, targeting five domains of adjustment most relevant to college students. The final chapter provides an overview of the unique adjustment challenges of ethnic minority students adjusting to predominantly white colleges as well as the adjustment process for minority students attending historically black colleges and universities. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in the fields of psychology, human development, and higher education who are interested in understanding the process of college adjustment. It is also an excellent starting point for scholars who may wish to design their own study of college students and their adjustment challenges.

Emerging adulthood, ages 18-25, is filled with transition and has been described as the most changing times of one0́9s life. This is also when two-thirds of the American population enters college, however, many dropout before completion of their desired degree. There is little evidence as to the existence of possible differences in adjustment trajectories or determinants of and influences on such trajectories. Thus, there is a gap in our theoretical understanding of the adjustment to college process. This study applied self-determination theory to provide theoretical insight to the adjustment to college process specifically paying attention to how and why maladjustment may occur. It was hypothesized that intrinsically motivated, authentic students and those with high basic need satisfaction at baseline would have better adjustment to college and less alcohol related problems at the one month follow-up. Further, those who are more likely to suppress their emotions and self-conceal would have worse adjustment to college and more alcohol related problems at the one month follow-up. Participants were recruited in diverse departments at the University of Houston. Three-hundred and fifty eight (Mean age = 21.82, SD = 5.520, 72.3% female) participants completed the baseline questionnaire and the follow-up one month later. All hypotheses were analyzed using multiple regression with the baseline SDT, concealment/suppression and baseline outcome variables entered as predictors of the time two outcome variables. Results revealed that baseline motivation and general needs satisfaction were positively associated with adjustment to college, while self-concealment was negatively associated with adjustment to college at time 2. However, only self-concealment remains a significant predictor when controlling for baseline adjustment to college. Alcohol related problems at time 2 were negatively associated with baseline motivation, authenticity, as well as positively associated with self-concealment. When controlling for baseline alcohol related problems results remained, however, self-concealment was no longer a significant predictor. The proposed research sheds light on our theoretical understanding of the adjustment to college process. These findings have practical utility and may inform development and implementation of interventions and programs targeting adjustment to college and alcohol related problems among college students.

College Student Psychological Adjustment provides the reader an in-depth understanding of students’ relationship experiences in college and how those experiences shape their adjustment to college. Each chapter examines research on one key relationship in a student’s life to better understand how those relationships are re-worked during the college years and what factors help determine adaptive relational outcomes. Along the way, a number of controversial topics are considered from a scholarly perspective, including the effects of helicopter parenting on students’ development in college, the prevalence and problematic nature of the hook-up culture on college campuses today, and policies related to whether students should be randomly assigned to live with their first-year roommates or be allowed to choose their roommates, based on a matching system. Aimed at advanced students and scholars in the fields of psychology, human development, and higher education, readers of this book will gain a fresh perspective on the relationship development of college students and possible avenues for intervention to help students enhance their relationships skills and prevent development of mental health difficulties.
