Originally printed in 1946 at the order of Vice Admiral Lockwood, Commander of Submarines, Pacific Fleet, United States Submarine Losses memorializes the 374 officers and 3131 men lost at sea between 1941 and 1945. It also chronicles the gallantry and persistence of these men, who under the most difficult conditions possible, performed critical missions and almost single-handedly decimated Japan¿s merchant fleet. ¿To those whose contribution meant the loss of sons, brothers or husbands in this war,¿ Admiral Lockwood noted in a speech given on Navy Day, 1945, ¿ I can assure you that they went down fighting and that their brothers who survived them took a grim toll of our savage enemy to avenge their deaths. May God rest their gallant souls.¿ This book is a testament to all those, living and dead, who served in the Silent Service in WWII. This enhanced, softbound edition features the entire original text and includes an official appendix of Axis submarine losses.

United States submarines compiled a tremendous record of achievement during World War II, but they paid heavily for their successes. A total of 52 submarines were lost, including 48 sunk directly or indirectly by enemy action. The personnel losses - 374 officers and 3,131 operational enlisted men - represented 16 percent of the officers and 13 percent of the enlisted men in the "silent service." Although relatively meager compared to Germany's losses of 700 to 800 subs and the 128 lost by Japan, this roll call of honor was still higher than that for other types of Allied ships. Three valuable appendices list the subs lost by Germany, Japan, and Italy."United States Submarine Losses: World War II" is a ship-by-ship description of each American sub lost at sea, including as many facts as can be determined regarding the circumstances of their sinking, as well as brief accounts of the combat accomplishments of each vessel and a list of their crew members at the time of their loss. These concise vignettes cover some of the most renowned submarines of the war, such as the Tang, which in its five patrols was credited with sinking 31 Japanese ships totaling 227,800 tons and damaging two, for a total of 4,100 tons - a record unexcelled among American subs. Some ships gained fame in the Navy for other reasons, such as the five Japanese destroyers sunk by the Harder - four on one patrol - "earning the reputation of being the Submarine Force's most terrible opponent of destroyers." This important book serves as a valuable reference work, an account of the often heroic efforts of U.S. Navy submarines in World War II, and a memorial tribute to the submariners who gave their lives for their country. 1946; reprinted 1963: 248 pages, ill.

The essential historical reference on British warships—fully revised. “Right at the top of the ‘must have’ list . . . A book which will get much use ” (Royal Navy and Maritime Book Reviews). This is the fourth fully revised edition of a book first published in 1970. This longevity is testimony to its enduring value as a reference work—indeed, “Colledge,” as the book is universally known, is still the first stop for anyone wanting more information on any British warship from the fifteenth century to the present day when only the name is known. Each entry gives concise details of dimensions, armament, and service dates, and its alphabetical and chronological arrangement makes it easy to track down the right ship—otherwise the Royal Navy’s tradition of reusing the same names can be misleading. When originally published, the second of the two volumes was devoted to minor fighting ships and hired and requisitioned vessels. For the third edition, published in one volume, this material was omitted, but for this edition, all the genuine fighting ships—like the numbered Coastal Forces craft—have been restored, resulting in a convenient but comprehensive single-volume listing of all significant vessels. Since the death of Jim Colledge, who was widely respected for his pioneering research on the technical details of warships, his magnum opus has been updated, corrected, and expanded with similar enthusiasm and attention to detail by Ben Warlow, a retired naval officer and author of a number of books in the field. “An amazing and immensely valuable work of dedicated and persistent research.” —Baird Maritime

The Maritime Archaeology Of A Modern Conflict written by Innes McCartney and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-24 with History categories.

Over the last 30 years, hydrographical marine surveys in the English Channel helped uncover the potential wreck sites of German submarines, or U-boats, sunk during the conflicts of World War I and World War II. Through a series of systemic dives, nautical archaeologist and historian Innes McCartney surveyed and recorded these wrecks, discovering that the distribution and number of wrecks conflicted with the published histories of U-boat losses. Of all the U-boat war losses in the Channel, McCartney found that some 41% were heretofore unaccounted for in the historical literature of World War I and World War II. This book reconciles these inaccuracies with the archaeological record by presenting case studies of a number of dives conducted in the English Channel. Using empirical evidence, this book investigates possible reasons historical inconsistencies persist and what Allied operational and intelligence-based processes caused them to occur in the first place. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in the fields of nautical archaeology and naval history, as well as wreck explorers.

Deep Sea Hunters written by Marin Bowman and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-11 with History categories.

This enthralling new release from Martin Bowman details all the varied and dynamic operations at sea carried out by RAF Coastal Command against the U-boats and the German Navy during the Second World War. Beginning with the disastrous Norwegian Campaign, it takes in the numerous attacks on the bustling German submarine base at Lorient, the attack on Brest, as well as many other pivotal and memorable events to enliven the history of the sea-lanes during the Second World War. Battles with the U-boats are brought to the fore, with details and experiences not only of the RAF pilots of Catalinas, Whitleys, Hudsons and Sunderlands, but also those of the targeted U-boat crews. In scenes reminiscent of 'Das Boot' German (and Italian) U-boat crews tell of their fears and experiences while under depth-charge attack and fire from above by Liberators, Fortresses, Halifaxes, Sunderlands and Mosquitoes. ??The 'big-game sport' of 'hunting U-boats', as it was termed, is relayed in full and gripping detail, with first-hand accounts from U-boat attackers punctuating Bowman's dramatic prose and resting alongside those of the German submariners. This two-sided history is sure to appeal to all enthusiasts interested in gaining a balanced insight into Second World War naval history.
