The decline of the socialist governments in Eastern and Central Europe and the resulting political and economic reorganizations of the 1990s provided a dramatic illustration of the far-reaching effects of social change. For those interested in the health and well-being of youth, such instances of social upheaval raise the question of how young people are affected socially and psychologically by societal changes, and whether their development is compromised or enhanced. This important volume considers the processes through which societal changes exert an impact on the course of adolescent development and identify individual and contextual factors that can modify the impact of social change and enhance the likelihood of a successful transition to adulthood.

"Making sense of the issues and challenges faced by young people today requires a thoughtful, thorough, and scientific exploration of adolescent development in an ever-changing world. Through four editions, Adolescence and Youth: Psychological Development in a Changing World has filled the need for such a text." "In this new edition, John Conger and Nancy Galambos emphasize a life span perspective, addressing development as a lifelong process that results from the continuing interaction between individuals and their environment. They present a new focus on adolescents at risk, reflecting the growing body of research on the nature, sources, and consequences of problem behaviors, such as substance abuse, adolescent pregnancy, youth violence, eating disorders, and depression." "This fifth edition also features a number of new boxes that present new and exciting research and focus on important social issues, challenging readers to consider alternative ways to view social problems. Additional boxes present real life stories about the joys and pains of adolescence. With an enhanced, integrated focus on gender and ethnicity and a new full-color design, Adolescence and Youth offers the most up-to-date, visually effective coverage for your adolescent development course."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This publication focuses on a conceptual and research-oriented analysis of the broader issues related to the transition to adulthood. The introduction discusses the societal changes in the highly industrialized countries since World War II which have extensive consequences for youth. The concept of youth as a stage and a lifestyle falling between adolescence and adulthood is explored along with the implications of the concept for the industrial nations. Part I of the report presents an interdisciplinary, descriptive overview of changing concepts and viewpoints relating to the transition to adulthood. The implications of these changes for schooling and on the economy and the labor market are discussed. Part II of the report explores the current relationships and changes among the three major institutions of work, family, and school as they affect the transition to adulthood. The third and final part of the report identifies a number of possible policy responses, within and outside of education, to the problems analyzed in the first sections. This section also identifies areas where further research is needed. Reference notes and a four-page bibliography conclude the report. (MCF)

In times of dramatic social changes, adolescents are the last children of the old system and the first adults of the new. The Hungarian and Polish adolescents documented in this book can be considered the omega-alpha generation of the great social, political, and economic changes that occurred during the late 1980s and early 1990s in central and eastern Europe. Adolescent Development and Rapid Social Change addresses the psychological consequences for these young people who came of age during a time of such uncertainty.

From the sociological point of view, adolescence traditionally has been described as a period of physical maturity and social immaturity. Adolescents reach physical adulthood before they are capable of functioning well in adult social roles. The disjunction between physical capabilities and socially allowed independence and power and the concurrent status ambiguities are viewed as stressful for the adolescent in modern Western society. It has been assumed that the need to disengage from parents during these years will result in high levels of rebellion and parent-child conflict. Moving into Adolescence follows students as they make a major life course transition from childhood into early adolescence. Substantial controversy has been generated within the behavioral sciences concerning the difficulty of adolescence as a transitional period. On the one hand, there are those who characterize the period as an exceptionally and necessarily stressful time in the life course. On the other hand, many investigators treat this view of adolescence as their straw man. To them, the supposed tumult of adolescence is just that--supposed and mythical. The purpose of this book is to study the transition from childhood into early and middle adolescence in order to investigate change along a wide variety of psychosocial dimensions with a particular focus on the self-image. The authors investigate the impact of timing of pubertal change and also the movement from an intimate, elementary school context into a large-scale secondary school environment. The first major movement into a large-scale organizational context may cause difficulty for the child, as may the dramatic changes of puberty. In addition, gender differences and changes in gender differences are studied. Both short- and long-term consequences of transition are examined focusing on is the role of pubertal change and school transition.
