Taking the Netherlands and Germany as case studies, the book identifies two forms of social capital that may work to increase employment, income and occupational status and, conversely, decrease unemployment. New insights into the concepts of bonding and bridging arise through quantitative research methods, using longitudinal and crosssectional data. Referring to a dense network with 'thick' trust, bonding is measured as family ties, co-ethnic ties and trust in the family. Bridging is seen in terms of interethnic ties, thus implying a crosscutting network with 'thin' trust. The Pier End is a play designed for performance by a community of players. It was commissioned to allow a group of people to come together, to display their talents and to entertain. It is set at ‘the other end of the pier’, on the edge of a small town beset with troubles. It explores timeless, universal themes such as the power of love and family, but is firmly in the present to relate to the modern day concerns of the cast and audience. Song and dance can be incorporated based on the talent of the ensemble, and five original songs are included. The hero, Jack, is effectively ‘an orphan’, although both parents are still alive in unknown locations. Jack acts as a mentor and supporter in his community, but when he is on his own he has dark thoughts about his lack of kinship. He tries to fill the void by dating three girls simultaneously, and he dislikes himself for his faithlessness. The play has been likened to a 21st century version of a medieval mystery play, and has an upbeat rtesolution when he discovers that one of his ladies is carrying his child, His mother has also mananged to track him doen, so he is joyful at the end of the play The community unite in their concerns for their town and they celebrate resolution and a bright future.

Essentially clinical in its approach, Psychic Retreats discusses the problem of patients who are 'stuck' and with whom it is difficult to make meaningful contact. John Steiner, an experienced psychoanalyst, uses new developments in Kleinian theory to explain how this happens. He examines the way object relationships and defences can be organized into complex structures which lead to a personality and an analysis becoming rigid and stuck, with little opportunity for development or change. These systems of defences are pathological organisations of the personality: John Steiner describes them as 'psychic retreats', into which the patient can withdraw to avoid contact both with the analyst and with reality. To provide a background to these original and controversial concepts, the author builds on more established ideas such as Klein's distinction between the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, and briefly reviews previous work on pathological organizations of the personality. He illustrates his discussion with detailed clinical material, with examples of the way psychic retreats operate to provide a respite from both paranoid-schizoid and depressive anxieties. He looks at the way such organizations function as a defence against unbearable guilt and describes the mechanism by which fragmentation of the personality can be reversed so the lost parts of the self can be regained and reintegrated in to the personality. Psychic Retreats is written with the practising psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists in mind. The emphasis is therefore clinical throughout the book, which concludes with a chapter on the technical problems which arise in the treatment of such severely ill patients.
