Dovendo introdurre la figura artistica di Albino Manca viene spontaneo pronunciare la locuzione latina Nemo propheta in patria. La storia di questo artista sardo inizia in un piccolo centro dell'Ogliastra, Tertenia. Come per tutti i gli artisti vissuti nel ventesimo secolo, il giovane, mostrando grande talento artistico, giunge a Roma dove debutta nel cantiere del Vittoriano e quindi all'Istituto di Belle Arti, sotto la guida dei grandi maestri Ettore Ferrari, Angelo Zanelli e Pietro Canonica. Il vero e massimo riconoscimento ufficiale però lo ottiene negli Stati Uniti d'America. Qui, da emigrato si trasferisce nel 1938, vivendo fino al 1976, anno della sua morte, nel Greenwich Village di New York, il quartiere degli artisti. Accettato all'interno di importanti associazioni di artisti e partecipando ai concorsi nazionali, lo scultore è riconosciuto come l'Italian artist. Attento osservatore della psicologia umana che affiora dall'animo di ogni soggetto rappresentato, le sue opere sono l'espressione di un'equilibrata sintesi tra il bello ed il razionale, tra il creare ed il costruire tra l'essere e il divenire. Tra committenze pubbliche e raffinati lavori di oreficeria, Manca vince infine la gara che gli darà l'occasione per entrare nell'élite artistica statunitense: la realizzazione della gigantesca The Diving Eagle che sovrasta il Memorial Battery Park ai caduti nell'Atlantico, l'opera che sorge proprio sull'estremità di Manhattan, in riva all'Hudson, di fronte alla Statua della Libertà. Con una ricchissima selezione di opere tra sculture, gioielli, medaglie e disegni e, ricostruendo per la prima volta la sua straordinaria vicenda artistica, oggi la città di Roma rende omaggio a questo artista commemorando il suo "ritorno" al Complesso Monumentale del Vittoriano, dove la sua carriera è iniziata.
