Im Oktober 1949 kehrte Theodor W. Adorno aus dem amerikanischen Exil in seine Geburtsstadt zurück, um wieder an einer deutschen Universität zu lehren. Frankfurt lag in Trümmern, die Nazis hatten nur die Kleider gewechselt, aber die Studierenden kamen in Scharen. Bald war der Philosoph wöchentlich im Radio zu hören und zum Stichwortgeber und »Erzieher« der jungen Bundesrepublik geworden. Als Adorno 1969 starb, waren das Institut für Sozialforschung und sein Direktor bundesweit bekannt. Die Frankfurter Schule befand sich auf dem Zenit ihrer öffentlichen Wirkung. Dieser Denkraum und seine Metamorphosen zwischen Nachkrieg und Wiedervereinigung sind das Thema dieses Buches, zwölf Mitarbeiter Adornos seine Protagonisten. Nach dem Tod des »Meisters« zerstreuten sie sich von der Stadt am Main nach Gießen, Lüneburg oder Starnberg. The International History of Communication Study maps the growth of media and communication studies around the world. Drawing out transnational flows of ideas, institutions, publications, and people, it offers the most comprehensive picture to date of the global history of communication research and education. Throughout its 65-year history, the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) has sought to facilitate international exchanges and research collaborations among academics and journalists in the field of media and communication. Created during a time of strong ideological tension following World War II in 1957 and with the support of UNESCO, the contributors to this edited collection highlight how the IAMCR and its members shaped the field of media and communications research. From its beginnings focusing on the mass media, including the press and journalism education, today the Association attracts researchers and practitioners who undertake critical analysis of contemporary media and communications, including online platforms and their governance. Consistent themes throughout the Association’s history have been its concern with human rights, law, culture and the political economy of the media and communication industries. Not content simply to understand developments in the media and communications field around the world, the Association’s membership has sought to ‘change the world’ through its published research and its participation in global, regional, national and local policy debate and practice. This volume is organised in four parts following an introduction authored by editors who are active members of IAMCR. Part I highlights eight prominent scholarly traditions of research which have attracted the interest of scholars from around the world as well as the way the Association has sought to be inclusive of early career scholars. Im neunten Band der Reihe geht Ansgar Martins kabbalistischen Spuren in der Philosophie Theodor W. Adornos (1903–1969) nach. Der Frankfurter Gesellschaftskritiker griff im Rahmen seines radikalen materialistischen Projekts gleichwohl auch auf ‚theologische‘ Deutungsfiguren zurück. Vermittelt durch den gemeinsamen Freund Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) stieß Adorno dabei auf das Werk des Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Scholem (1897–1982). Zwischen Frankfurt und Jerusalem entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Korrespondenz. Für Adorno erscheint vor dem Hintergrund lückenloser kapitalistischer Vergesellschaftung jede religiöse Sinngebung in der Moderne als unmöglich. Der Tradition der jüdischen Mystik schreibt er hingegen eine innere Affinität zu dieser hoffnungslosen Logik des ‚Verfalls‘ zu. Sie scheint ihm zur unumgänglichen Säkularisierung religiöser Gehalte aufzufordern. Adornos kabbalistische Marginalien beziehen einen breiten Horizont jüdisch-messianischer Ideen ein. Er verleugnet dabei nie, dass es ihm um eine sehr diesseite Verwirklichung geoffenbarter Heilsversprechen zu tun ist: Transzendenz sei als erfüllte Immanenz, als verwirklichte Utopie zu denken. In diesem Anliegen sieht Adorno selbst jedoch gerade seine Übereinstimmung mit der Kabbala. Adornos kabbalistische Motive, die auf Scholems Forschungen zurückgehen, werden hier ausführlich an seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen untersucht. In seinem Verständnis der philosophischen Tradition sowie im Modell der Metaphysischen Erfahrung suchte er etwa explizit Anschluss an Deutungen der Kabbala: Das unerreichbare Urbild der Philosophie sei die Interpretation der geoffenbarten Schrift. Wie säkularisierte heilige Texte wurden Werke von Beethoven, Goethe, Kafka oder Schönberg so zum Anlass für ‚mystische‘ Interpretationen. Deren detaillierte Untersuchung erlaubt, das viel beschworene jüdische Erbe von Adornos Philosophie zu konkretisieren und bedenkenswerte Einzelheiten von der Negativen Dialektik zur Ästhetik in den Blick zu nehmen.

International ausgerichteter Band über Anschlussfähigkeit und Aktualität von Pierre Bourdieu in der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Der Beitrag von Pierre Bourdieu für die Scientific Community der Sozialwissenschaften ist unbestritten und aus dem internationalen Wissenschaftsdiskurs nicht mehr wegzudenken. Auch für die Kommunikationswissenschaft - eine Disziplin, die die mediale und kommunikative Wirklichkeit und ihre sozialen Zusammenhänge analysiert - sind die Denkwerkzeuge des französischen Soziologen für viele (wenn nicht für alle) Fragestellungen unverzichtbar. Was für zahlreiche internationale Vertreter des Fachs als Selbstverständlichkeit gilt, wird in einigen Bereichen der deutschen Kommunikationswissenschaft weitgehend ausgeblendet, dominieren hier derzeit doch eher psychologische Konzepte und Methoden. Der Band von Thomas Wiedemann und Michael Meyen plädiert für eine Nutzung von Pierre Bourdieus Ansätzen und (über diesen Einzelfall hinaus) für die produktive Durchdringung des Forschungsfeldes mit Sozialtheorien.
