In The Return of the Contemporary, Nicolás Campisi combines the fields of post-dictatorship studies and environmental humanities to analyze Latin American cultural production in the neoliberal age. Each chapter pairs two authors from different parts of Latin America and the Caribbean who create a common vocabulary in which to frame the various crises of the region’s present and recent past, such as climate change, forced migration, the collapse of state institutions, and the afterlives of slavery. By situating his argument at the intersection of ecocritical and environmental humanities, affect studies, and the politics of memory and postmemory, Campisi presents new comparative methods to show how Latin America's neoliberal crisis prompted significant changes in how the novel as a form imagines a different future.

In the realm of human consciousness, memory reigns supreme, weaving the intricate tapestry of our lives. This book delves into the enigmatic world of amnesia, exploring its profound impact on the human psyche and the intricate interplay between memory, identity, and the essence of self. Through a captivating blend of personal narratives, scientific insights, and cultural perspectives, we embark on a journey to unravel the mysteries of memory loss and gain a deeper understanding of this elusive condition. With each chapter, we delve into the diverse manifestations of amnesia, from its sudden and devastating onset to its more insidious and gradual forms. We examine the neurological underpinnings of memory and the complex interplay of brain processes that give rise to our subjective experiences. We explore the psychological and emotional toll that amnesia takes on individuals and their loved ones, navigating the challenges of identity reconstruction and the search for meaning in a world stripped of familiar landmarks. Beyond the realm of individual experience, we venture into the broader cultural and societal implications of amnesia. We examine how literature, film, and art have grappled with this elusive phenomenon, shedding light on its universal human significance. We investigate historical accounts of amnesia, uncovering forgotten stories that offer glimpses into the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Through these diverse perspectives, we illuminate the profound impact of amnesia and challenge prevailing notions of memory as a fixed and immutable entity. We invite readers to ponder the fragile nature of our recollections and the malleability of our sense of self. We question the boundaries between reality and illusion, truth and fiction, and explore the intricate dance between memory and imagination. This book is an exploration of the human condition, a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit, even in the face of adversity. Patrick Modiano (1945-) has published seventeen novels over the past twenty-seven years and is considered one of France's foremost writers. His first three works, dealing principally with the German occupation of France during World War II, are generally considered to have led to a reconsideration of the Gaullist myth which endured for twenty-five years after the war. Along with Marcel Ophuls's film, The Sorrow and the Pity, Modiano's novels opened French eyes to the more ambiguous role played during the occupation by the average French citizen. His subsequent novels have continued to probe the relationship between history, memory and fiction. This study will be of interest to readers of French fiction and history as it looks at their relation-ship to memory and shows that the three are inextricably linked in a way that enriches our understanding of our past, whether it be collective or personal. Modiano, while seemingly obsessed with his own past, in fact indicates an opening toward the future by attempting to put the past to rest in his fiction.
