Adsorption technology is a promising avenue for wastewater treatment. Numerous adsorbent materials are presently synthesized. Green or environmental friendly adsorbents are derived from plants and agricultural crop sources, giving them a very low production cost when compared to synthetic polymers. This monograph explains the basic principles of green adsorption technology, their production processes and strategies to remove different categories of environmental pollutants (dyes, heavy metals and phenols/pesticides). The book explains details in terms of features such as adsorption capacity, physico-chemical kinetics and reuse potential. A summary of the economics and future prospect for green adsorption technology is also given. This text is a handy reference for environmental chemistry students, researchers and policy makers.

This book discusses various examples on the use of ion exchange in chemical processing, mainly in aqueous systems but also in non-aqueous systems and in gas streams. The theory behind these examples is briefly discussed in order to make the subjects better understood. The focus is on ion exchange rather than on chemical processing, it is therefore addressed to all those working in chemical processing industries or in parallel industries for whom ion exchange is not their primary field of experience.

Adsorption promises to play an integral role in several future energy and environmental technologies, including hydrogen storage, CO removal for fuel cell technology, desulfurization of transportation fuels, and technologies for meeting higher standards on air and water pollutants. Ralph Yang's Adsorbents provides a single and comprehensive source of knowledge for all commercial and new sorbent materials, presenting the fundamental principles for their syntheses, their adsorption properties, and their present and potential applications for separation and purification. Chapter topics in this authoritative, forward-looking volume include: - Formulas for calculating the basic forces or potentials for adsorption - Calculation of pore-size distribution from a single adsorption isotherm - Rules for sorbent selection - Fundamental principles for syntheses/preparation, adsorption properties, and applications of commercially available sorbents - Mesoporous molecular sieves and zeolites - ̧-complexation sorbents and their applications - Carbon nanotubes, pillared clays, and polymeric resins Yang covers the explosion in the development of new nanoporous materials thoroughly, as the adsorption properties of some of these materials have remained largely unexplored. The whole of this book benefits from the new adsorbent designs made possible by the increase in desktop computing and molecular simulation, making Adsorbents useful to both practicing laboratories and graduate programs. Ralph Yang's comprehensive study contributes significantly to the resolution of separation and purification problems by adsorption technologies.

Among various water and wastewater treatment technologies, the adsorption process is considered better because of lower cost, simple design and easy operation. Activated carbon (a universal adsorbent) is generally used for the removal of diverse types of pollutants from water and wastewater. Research is now being directed towards the modification of carbon surfaces to enhance its adsorption potential towards specific pollutants. However, widespread use of commercial activated carbon is sometimes restricted especially in developing or poor countries due to its higher costs. Attempts are therefore being made to develop inexpensive adsorbents utilizing abundant natural materials, agricultural and industrial waste materials. Use of waste materials as low-cost adsorbents is attractive due to their contribution in the reduction of costs for waste disposal, therefore contributing to environmental protection. This e-book explores knowledge on recent developments in adsorbents synthesis and their use in water pollution control. This handy reference work is intended for researchers and scientists actively engaged in the study of adsorption and the development and application of efficient adsorption technology for water treatment. This e-book covers a wide range of topics including modeling aspects of adsorption process and the applications of conventional and non-conventional adsorbents in water remediation emphasizing sorption mechanisms of different pollutants on the adsorbents.

Chitosan is a natural amino polymer. It is eco-friendly, biocompatible, biodegradable, cost-effective, easily available and has high potential to be utilized as an adsorbent. Because of their excellent chelating power, chitosan-based adsorbents have a very high ability to tightly bind the pollutants present in contaminated water and wastewater. Different heavy metals and toxic dyes can be effectively removed. Chapter 1 deals with the chemical, physical, physicochemical and mechanical properties of chitosan and chitosan-based materials. Adsorption data on the removal of heavy metals and different dyes have been compiled. Chapter 2 covers the utilization of chitosan and its derivatives for the adsorptive removal of mercury from water and wastewater. Chapter 3 describes novel chitosan-based nanocomposites for dye removal applications. Chapter 4 discusses the effect of different chitosan modifications on its structure and specific surface area. Chapter 5 covers the applications of chitin and chitosan-based adsorbents for the removal of natural dyes from wastewater. Chapter 6 highlights the adsorptive treatment of textile effluents using chemically modified chitosan as adsorbents. Chapter 7 reviews the applications of chitosan-based adsorbents for the removal of arsenicals. Chapter 8 centers on the adsorption capacity enhancement of chitosan by chemical modification. Chapter 9 focuses on the smart use of surfactants for the modification of chitosan and some other biomaterials and their subsequent use for the removal of contaminants from aqueous solutions. Chapter 10 reviews the use of chitosan-based nanocomposites as adsorbents for the removal of dyes from wastewater. Chapter 11 describes the preparation of uniformly distributed platinum nanoparticles decorated with graphene oxide-chitosan by employing a microwave-assisted method. The nanocomposite can be used for the removal of dye from aqueous solution.
