The objective of the project is to develop a highly reliable advanced hybrid particulate collector (AHPC) that can provide> 99.99% particulate collection efficiency for all particle sizes from 0.01 to 50[micro]m, is applicable for use with all US coals, and is cost-competitive with existing technologies. The main technical progress for the previous quarter was the design and construction of the 200-acfm working model of the AHPC. Some additional modifications to the 200-acfm AHPC were made during April through June, and extensive shakedown and cold-flow testing were completed. The initial modeling results by ALENTEC (presented in the last quarterly report) indicated that the flow baffling as constructed should be sufficient to direct most of the flow into the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) zone of the AHPC before it reaches the bags. Cold-flow tests now confirm that the baffle configuration is sufficient for proper AHPC performance. Cold-flow multiple cleaning cycle tests show that there is a huge benefit to having the electric field on compared to having the field off. These tests also show that the AHPC functions properly and that pressure drop can be easily controlled.

The objective of this project is to develop practical strategies and systems for the simultaneous control of SO2, NO(subscript x), particulate matter, and air toxics emissions from coal-fired boilers in such a way as to keep coal economically and environmentally competitive as a utility boiler fuel. Of particular interest is the control of air toxics emissions through the cost-effective use of conventional flue gas clean-up equipment such as electrostatic precipitators (ESP's), fabric filters (baghouses), and SO2 removal systems such as wet scrubbers and various clean coal technologies. This objective will be achieved through extensive development testing in Babcock and Wilcox's state-of-the-art, 10 MW{sub e} equivalent, Clean Environment Development Facility (CEDF). The project has extended the capabilities of the CEDF to facilitate air toxics emissions control development work on backend flue gas cleanup equipment. Specifically, an ESP, a baghouse, and a wet scrubber for SO2 (and air toxics) control were added--all designed to yield air toxics emissions data under controlled conditions, and with proven predictability to commercial systems. The specific objectives of the project are to: measure and understand production and partitioning of air toxics species in coal-fired power plant systems; optimize the air toxics removal performance of conventional flue gas cleanup systems; quantify the impacts of coal cleaning on air toxics emissions; identify and/or develop advanced air toxics emissions control concepts; develop and validate air toxics emissions measurement and monitoring techniques; and establish an air toxics data library to facilitate studies of the impacts of coal selection, coal cleaning, and emissions control strategies on the emissions of coal-fired power plants.

The general goal of this project is to provide a fundamental understanding of deposition processes of flyash and pulverized coal particles in coal combustors and coal gasifiers. In the period of April 1 to June 30, 1996, further research progress was made. The computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent flows was applied to the dispersion and deposition analysis. The study of particle transport and deposition in a circular duct was completed and the major findings are summarized. A detailed model for particle resuspension process in a gas flow is developed. The new model accounts for the surface adhesion, surface roughness, as well as the structure of near wall turbulent flows. The model also accounts for all the relevant hydrodynamic forces and torques exerted on the particle attached to a surface. Progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.
