Lung sounds auscultation is often the first noninvasive resource for detection and discrimination of respiratory pathologies available to the physician through the use of the stethoscope. Hearing interpretation, though, was the only means of appreciation of the lung sounds diagnostic information for many decades. Nevertheless, in recent years, computerized auscultation combined with signal processing techniques has boosted the diagnostic capabilities of lung sounds. The latter were traditionally analyzed and characterized by morphological changes in the time domain using statistical measures, by spectral properties in the frequency domain using simple spectral analysis, or by nonstationary properties in a joint time–frequency domain using short-time Fourier transform. Advanced signal processing techniques, however, have emerged in the last decade, broadening the perspective in lung sounds analysis. The scope of this book is to present up-to-date signal processing techniques that have been applied to the area of lung sound analysis. It starts with a description of the nature of lung sounds and continues with the introduction of new domains in their representation, new denoising techniques, and concludes with some reflective implications, both from engineers’ and physicians’ perspective. Issues of nonstationarity, nonlinearity, non-Gaussianity, modeling, and classification of lung sounds are addressed with new methodologies, revealing a more realistic approach to their pragmatic nature. Advanced denoising techniques that effectively circumvent the noise presence (e.g., heart sound interference, background noise) in lung sound recordings are described, providing the physician with high-quality auscultative data. The book offers useful information both to engineers and physicians interested in bioacoustics, clearly demonstrating the current trends in lung sound analysis. This book contains a complete and accurate mathematical treatment of the sounds of music with an emphasis on musical timbre. The book spans the range from tutorial introduction to advanced research and application to speculative assessment of its various techniques. All the contributors use a generalized additive sine wave model for describing musical timbre which gives a conceptual unity, but is of sufficient utility to be adapted to many different tasks.

How do you take the sounds you imagine in your head and make them come out of the speakers? Making Sound takes some different but very effective perspectives on learning to use the tools at hand to create the sounds you want. Following these techniques and philosophies will help bridge the gap between the tools you use and the ideas in your head. Apart from the more in-depth topics in the 19 chapters there are 95 short inspiring tips and tricks that you can reference and use while creating music. Making Sound is philosophical at times, highly practical and packed with actionable tips, tricks and creative techniques. The content is designed to give you new ideas and perspecitves to help you fuel your creativity and ultimately make the techniques your own. The second edition also includes interviews with some top music industry professionals that reveil their processes for the first time. The topics in the book include: Use common tools to create different moods and textures Make virtual instruments sound realistic Advanced sound design Ways to become more productive The secret of contrast in mixing and composition Techniques to get the low end of the mix perfect The art of arrangement Create compelling and exciting grooves Create different kinds of space in a mix How to "glue" a mix Techniques for dealing with stress Essential music theory for composers and producers Ways to overcome digital "sterility" or harshness Dealing with clients What do people in the industry say about the book? "This book will open your eyes!" - Joey Sturgis, legendary music producer "You've got to check this book out!" - iZotope "This opened my eyes more than once! Perfecting Sound Forever written by Greg Milner and has been published by Granta Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-03 with Music categories.

From our CD collections to iPods bursting with MP3s to the hallowed vinyl of DJs, recordings are the most common way we experience music. Perfecting Sound Forever tells the story of recorded music, introducing us to the innovators, musicians and producers who have affected the way we hear our favourite songs, from Thomas Edison to Phil Spector. Exploring the balance that recordings strike between the real and the represented, Greg Milner asks the questions which have divided sound recorders for the past century: should a recording document reality as faithfully as possible, or should it improve upon or somehow transcend the music it records? What does the perfect record sound like? The answers he uncovers will change the way we think about music.
