This text presents comprehensive review of the recommendations of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology for reporting results of respiratory cytology specimens along with advances in diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive immunohistochemical and molecular techniques which can be performed on cytology specimens. The majority of the text focuses on the standardized terminology and nomenclature for respiratory cytology as recommended by the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology. Each of the diagnostic categories are described in depth and formal definitions for each category are given along with cytologic criteria. Explanatory notes are given discussing limitations of the category as well as its malignancy risk and reproducibility. Management recommendations are supplied for each category. Sample reports documenting the preferred reporting format are also given. Each category is associated with a reference list establishing the evidence based nature of the categories. An in depth discussion of ancillary testing is provided, including the utilization of microbiologic culture, immunohistochemistry, and molecular techniques. Substantial emphasis is placed on molecular diagnostics necessary for optimization of personalized testing and the appropriate use of targeted therapies. The text represents a comprehensive resource for the state of the science of the cytologic diagnosis of respiratory lesions.

Advances in Clinical Cytology describes the ultrastructural dynamics of endometrial hyperplasia and neoplasia. This book contains 11 chapters that evaluate the meaning of endometrial aspiration in gynecological application and address the morphologic response of hyperplastic and neoplastic endometrium to exogenous progestogens. Some of the topics covered in the book are the evaluation of the methods of cytological sampling; population screening for cervical cancer; advances in pulmonary cytology; and selection of high-risk cases of cancer development for screening and collection of specimens. Other chapters deal with the evaluation of cytology as a method of screening, as well as the cytological features of human polyomavirus-infected cells. An analysis of the functional connections between epithelial cells is provided. The concluding chapters are devoted to the morphology of the cell surface and the method for staining smears. The book can provide useful information to doctors, cytologists, students, and researchers.

Diagnostic cytology has recently enjoyed increased attention and significance in modern research. Essential information on latest developments in methods and applications in cytology is provided by this book. Chapters review methodological advances, such as in cancer detection, and explore potential relationships to molecular biology. Also discussed are: viral infection, fundamentals of quantitative methods, and the revolutionary role of immunocytochemistry in diagnostic cell typing. The new insights offered by transmission and scanning electron microscopy into cellular structure and function are discussed, and the connections between cytology and histology are highlighted. Epidemiology in connection with cytology is incorporated in special reports. The current developments described here will become routine methods of the cytology of tomorrow.

Cytology refers to a branch of pathology that deals with making diagnoses of diseases and conditions through the examination of tissue samples from the body (MedicineNet.com). This new edition has been fully revised to provide trainees and clinicians with the latest advances in the field of cytology. Divided into four sections, each further sub-divided into multiple chapters, the book covers general cytology and the characteristics of cells and tissues, exfoliative cytology (an alternative to biopsy), laboratory techniques, and fine needle aspiration cytology. The second edition includes two new chapters on round cell tumours and infections, as well as many new and updated images and figures. Review questions conclude each chapter and new classifications of diseases and molecular genetics are also covered in depth. Progress in science is often promoted by a new method. Diagnostic cytology, however, developed slowly over a whole century, mainly in differentiating malignant from benign cells from various tissues. The decisive step in this development was the intensive investigation of one local ization by Papanicolaou: The application of cytology for screening in the field of gynecologic oncology made it an acknowledged technique. Consequently, materials inves tigated before were tested again on a larger scale and new ones were included into the program. The possibility of a wide-range application of this diag nostic method, which carries a low risk for the patient and is low in cost, attracted the specialists of many fields. One of the problems which has resulted is the coordination of training and quality assurance for a large group of people from different fields and with different interests and whose experience in morphology varies. In this volume general problems of cytology are dis cussed, as is the question "who is a medical cytologist?" Education and training are the topics of the contributions by Coleman, Holzner, Jenny, Koss and Muller, cover ing the situation in the European Community, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the USA. A special contribu tion by Lange concerns the situation of cytotechnologists, paramedicals important for cytologic screening programs.
