Post-fire defects in advanced ceramics are usually traced to pre-existing microstructure flaws in pre-fired ware. It is difficult for the advanced materials industry to improve manufacturing process reliability because of (i) the inability to detect and monitor the evolution of these flaws throughout unit operations and (ii) the inability to rigorously model the evolution of these flaws throughout unit operations. This dissertation provides new experimental and theoretical approaches to characterize ceramic microstructure and/or its evolution during drying, burnout, and sintering. First, ultrasonic velocity measurements were combined with modeling to provide a nondestructive method capable of detecting microstructure features of contiguity, specific surface area, and changes in particle shape. With this new model, this thesis also provides a better fundamental understanding of the physics and mathematics underlying relationships between microstructure and the macroscopic sound velocity through a given particulate medium.
