Foraminiferal cultures now serve as tools for researching biological, environmental, and geological topics. However, the biological backgrounds, in particular the natural histories of foraminifera, largely remain unclear. It is also true that the different techniques used in different subdisciplines are a setback to fully understanding the subject. Taken together, these factors prevent progress in experimental approaches to foraminiferal studies. This book aims to share and exchange knowledge between researchers from different subdisciplines, and the book should interest not only foraminiferal researchers but also scientists who are working with marine organisms to explore questions in relation to biology, geology, and oceanography.

In a single volume, the authors bring together a review of current biological understanding of planktonic foraminifera and apply it to developments in sedimentology. With the growing interest in the shells of this class of protozoa as indicators of the history of the earth, revealed through the sedimentary record, a comprehensive analysis of the biology of contemporary foraminifera has become necessary. Main topics covered include Taxonomy, Collecting and Culture Methods, Cellular Ultrastructure, Host and Symbiont Relationships, Trophic Activity and Nutrition, Reproduction, Shell Ontogeny and Architecture, Ecology and Sedimentation and Settlement of Shells.

From the reviews: "This is now the definitive, authoritative text on applied foraminiferal micropaleontology and should be in the library of all practicing micropaleontologists." (William A. Berggren, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Micropaleontology, 47:1 (2001)"During the last 20 years there has been an explosion of publications about foraminifera from an amazing variety of disciplines: basic cell biology, algal symbiosis, biomineralization, biogeography, ecology, pollution, chemical oceanography, geochemistry, paleoceanography, and geology. This book summarizes contributions by leading researchers in these diverse fields. It is not just another text on the biology of foraminifera. Rather, Barun Sen Gupta has accomplished his objective to "write an advanced text for university students that would also serve as a reference book for professionals"." (Howard J. Spero, University of California at Davis in Limnology and Oceanography, 45:8 (2000).

Planktic Foraminifers In The Modern Ocean written by Ralf Schiebel and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-17 with Science categories.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the taxonomy, biology, sedimentation, and carbonate geochemistry of modern species. Students, early career and advanced scientists alike will profit from a broad synthesis of the current understanding of planktic foraminifers as an ecological indicator, biogeochemical factories, and proxies in paleoceanography. The classification of modern species is amply illustrated with electron and light microscope images of morphotypes, addresses the state-of-the-art of molecular genetics of species, and provides a detailed guide for any laboratory analyses. The biology of planktic foraminifers is extensively discussed in chapters dedicated to the cellular ultrastructure, nutrition, symbionts, reproduction, ontogeny, and test architecture. Building on the biological prerequisites, the distribution of planktic foraminifers is discussed at regional to global scale. The geochemistry and sedimentation of tests are considered in relation to the ecology of the living animal. In the final chapter, which examines the most common methods in planktic foraminifer research, hands-on information is provided on sampling, processing and analyzing samples in the laboratory, as well as selected established methods for data interpretation. The various topics discussed in this book are aimed at the application of planktic foraminifers as sensitive indicators of the changing climate and marine environment.

Evolution And Geological Significance Of Larger Benthic Foraminifera written by Marcelle K. BouDagher-Fadel and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-17 with Science categories.

The over-all aim of the book is to collect and add to the information published already on the larger benthic foraminifera and in cases their associated algae. Many decades of research in the Far East, to some extent in the Middle East and Americas has lead to numerous articles with confused systematics. Therefore, with the aid of new and precise age dates, from calcareous nannofossils and Sr isotopes, the current schemes of the larger foraminifera in a relatively precise chronostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic framework are revised. This is achieved by: 1) establishing the systematic and occurrences of larger foraminifera from carbonate rocks in successions covering the Carboniferous to Miocene, with careful taxonomic comparison with the known records in the different bioprovinces; 2) illustration fossils of different families and groups at generic levels. 3) illustrations of important species and comparing distributions of different taxa. The inventory of larger benthic foraminifera focuses on the main important groups and the illustration of their genera. Reviews of the global state of the art of each group are complemented with the new data, and the direct palaeobiogeographic relevance of the new data is analyzed. A unique, comprehensive reference work on the larger foraminifera A documentation of the biostratigraphic ranges and palaeoecological significance of larger foraminifera which is essential for understanding many major oil-bearing sedimentary basins The palaeogeographic interpretations of the shallow marine late Palaeozoic to Cenozoic world

Foraminifera written by M. Dan Georgescu and has been published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Science categories.

This book consists of a collection of ten articles covering a variety of modern research topics in foraminiferal classification, stratigraphic distribution, ecology, paleoceanography and evolution. Significant contributions include road-opening studies in the evolutionary occurrence of the group in the Early Jurassic and evolutionary classification of the Cretaceous heterohelicid, planomalinid and globotruncanid planktics. Two general descriptions of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages from the Late Jurassic of Canada and modern sediments of the central Mediterranean Sea further add to the conceptual high density of the volume. A distinct advance in the biostratigraphy of the benthic foraminifera is the definition of the concept of biosequence, which is crucial for a better integration of the foraminiferal changes in time and space with the sequence stratigraphy concepts. Ecology and oceanography studies in both modern and ancient settings focus, among others, on the changes at the Cretaceous/Cenozoic boundary in the Tethyan Region and modern anoxia influences on the foraminiferal communities of the Black Sea. The variety of new and well-documented ideas, data and interpretations complement and at the same time challenge the already existing ones. Overall, the volume is of potential high interest for the foraminiferologists involved in both fundamental and applied inland and offshore studies.
