This volume is the second one of the 16th East-European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS 2012), held on September 18-21, 2012, in Poznań, Poland. This volume contains the proceedings of the First International Conference on Advances in Information Systems (ADVIS) held in Izmir (Turkey), 25{27 October, 2000. This conference was dedicated to the memory of Professor Esen Ozkarahan. He was great researcher who made an essential contribution to the development of information systems. This conference was organized by the Computer - gineering Department of Dokuz Eylul University of Izmir. This department was established in 1994 by the founding chairman Professor Ozkarahan and there he worked for the last ve years of his live. The main goal of the conference was to bring together researchers from all around the world working in di erent areas of information systems to share new ideas and to represent their latest results. We received 80 submissions from 30 countries. The Program Committee selected 44 papers for presentation at the conference. The invited and accepted contributions cover a large variety of topics: - neral aspects of information systems, data bases, data warehousing, computer networks, Internet technologies, content-based image retrieval, information - trieval, constraint programming and arti cial intelligence. The success of the conference was dependent upon the hard work of a large number of people. We gratefully acknowledge the members of the Program C- mittee who helped to coordinate the process of refereeing all submitted papers. We also thank all the other specialists who reviewed the papers.

The 3rd Eastern European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS’99) took place on 13-16- September 1999, in Maribor, Slovenia. It was organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMOD, the Moscow chapter of ACM SIGMOD, Slovenian Society Informatika, and the Slovenian Ministry of Technology. The aim of the ADBIS series of conferences is to provide a forum for the exchange of scientific achievements and experiences using innovative methods and approaches between the research communities of Central and Eastern Europe and the rest of the world in the area of databases and information systems. The 1999 conference continues the series of ADBIS events held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Poznan. The ADBIS steering committee has the ambition to make the ADBIS conference the premiere database and information systems conference in Central and Eastern Europe, to increase interaction and collaboration between researchers from East and West, and to provide an internationally recognized forum for the presentation of research and experiences in all aspects of modern database technology and information systems. To achieve these goals an international program committee selected 26 full research papers in a rigorous reviewing process from a total of 94 submissions from 33 different countries. This high number of submissions from so many different areas shows the truly worldwide recognition of and interest in the ADBIS series.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Advances in Information Systems (ADVIS) held in Izmir, Turkey, 23–25 October 2002. This conference was dedicated to the memory of Prof. Esen Ozkarahan. He was a great researcher who made an essential contribution to the development of information systems. Prof. Ozkarahan was one of the pioneers of database machine research and database systems in Turkey. This conference was organized by the Computer Engineering department of Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir. This department was established in 1994 by Prof. Ozkarahan and he worked there for the last ?ve years of his life. The main goal of the conference was to bring together researchers from all around the world working in di?erent areas of information systems, to share new ideas and present their latest results. This time we received 94 submissions from 27 countries. The program committee selected 40 papers for presentation at the conference. During the conference a workshop was organized on the topic “New Information Technologies in Education”. The invited and accepted cont- butions cover a large variety of topics: general aspects of information systems, databases and data warehouses, information retrieval, multiagent systems and technologies, distributed and parallel computing, evolutionary algorithms and system programming, and new information technologies in education.
