Advantage Play tells the dramatic stories of the key technological breakthroughs in four thousand years of sporting history used to gain an advantage in sport. Novel materials are never far away: rubber for rugby and tennis balls, carbon fibre for bikes and prosthetics, polyurethane for swimsuits. Breakthroughs crop up throughout history, not just for modern football boots but for the javelin of the ancient Greeks and even the original starting line at Olympia. Our obsession with sporting data is not new although our methods of collecting it is: phones, sensors and monitors. Together, these breakthroughs reveal that the way we design sports equipment has always been much the same. Rather than being a new thing, sports technology is actually as old as civilisation. Where will it all end? All current track and field events at the modern Olympic Games will reach their limit within a generation. With his 30 years as a sports engineer, Steve Haake shows that in a world where top performances are static, where we've found all the best athletes and deployed the best coaching methods, the one thing that might distinguish the winners from the losers is new technology.

Through 20 years of playing, studying, and thinking about Blackjack, I have witnessed a recurring clash between some of the players. On one side of the debate, we have the advantage players. They are the ones who are able to back up and see the big picture. They are able to see beyond the short-term fluctuations in the same way that the gambling industry itself does to obtain a mathematical advantage. For them, the game is a means to an end, and they are not concerned with having fun unless it leads to long-term profit. On the other side, we have the voodoo players. They may know that advantage players have a long-term advantage, but they may also know that card counting is difficult to master, does not guarantee that you will win, takes some of the fun out of the game, and can get you kicked out of casinos. Voodoo players who use strategies can be divided into two categories. One category consists of voodoo players who use strategies that can lead to the instant gratification of a large payout. They want what they want when they want it and they don't want to wait for it. For them, the game is about having fun and they know what is possible in the short term, regardless of the odds. The other category consists of voodoo players who prefer to avoid losing, even if it means sacrificing the possible thrill of a big win. They know that it is no fun to lose money and are perfectly satisfied with a small win or breaking even. They take more of a defensive approach to playing and hope to avoid a losing streak that wipes them out. Rather than choosing a side and defending it, I have created a bridge between the voodoo player in the second category and the advantage player. This is where my personal journey has led me, and it is the inspiration for this work.

With the help of the easy-to-master steps in this book, even a novice gambler can go from being a traditional blackjack player to a card counter--an advantage player with a true edge over the house. For a dozen years, Frank Scoblete was a devastating card-counter, consistently beating casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Tunica, Mississippi and angering the casino bosses by knowing more about how to win money than almost anyone who ever challenged a casino. He employed sophisticated methods, including card-counting and little-known advantage-play techniques to turn the tables on the house. Now Frank, known as an icon of the gambling industry, shares with readers everything he knows about beating casinos at blackjack, including techniques for one, two, four, six, and eight deck games such as "end play," "the fat finger method," "card groupings," and several card counting systems that are easy to learn, but powerful and effective to play. "I Am a Card Counter" is an essential resource for any gambler looking to succeed at the blackjack table.

A short guide about how to play blackjack, blackjack variants, strategies, tournaments, card counting, advantage gambling techniques, terminology. The rules of casino blackjack are generally determined by law or regulation, which establishes certain rule variations allowed at the discretion of the casino. The rules of any particular game are generally posted on or near the table, failing which there is an expectation that casino staff will provide them on request. Over 100 variations of blackjack have been documented. Each blackjack game has a basic strategy, which is playing a hand of any total value against any dealer’s up-card, which loses the least money to the house in the long term. Blackjack can be played in tournament form, where players start with equal numbers of chips and the aim is to finish among the top chip-holders.
