Today's society faces a serious and potentially dangerous challenge with its youth. Many of America's children are overweight or obese, and their physical education classes are typically their only form of exercise. Lack of motivation, technology, and inexperience all contribute to the sedentary lifestyles children are leading. Standard Physical Education classes teach many games and sports, but if students do not feel a connection to these activities, they are less likely to continue them on their own time. Studies also consistently show that students do not like being compared to their classmates, something that is hard to hide if they are in constant competition with each other in their Physical Education classes. Research results indicate that if students feel intrinsically motivated and proud of their accomplishments, they are more likely to continue in these activities. Activities that are non-competitive but teach fitness principles, teamwork, cooperation, communication, and other skills include outdoor adventure activities such as hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, and surfing. Research on student motivation, adventure activities, curriculum models, and education theories was reviewed to support the development of a year round Adventure Education curriculum for students. The curriculum was created and is currently under review for approval with local high school administration.
