Adventures in Integrative Education is a practical and easily accessible guidebook that tells both why and shows how teachers of the primary grades can meet core curriculum goals while providing the expressive, physical, and social requirements for whole child learning. Integrative Education is highly successful, but few teachers can make time for the extensive lesson design and preparation it requires. This book and companion multimedia platform, The Blue Alligator Blues and Other Video Songs, provide the means for presenting and integrating information into a workable system for learning. The video songs provide easily adaptable activities that enhance literacy for learners with diverse abilities and needs. Jan Magray has eloquently and insightfully captured a desperate need in our society to make education exciting and accessible to all children. This educator has created a format that allows for this method of learning to be easily incorporated into mainstream curriculum. Kara Salomon, M.A., Behavioral Therapist and Special Needs Educator. Curriculum integration often faces criticisms by educators as being unnecessary or a passing fad. But for education to keep up with the changing world and combat current problems, curriculum integration must be used. As the world becomes more complex and researchers find out more about learning, it is evident that forming connections between curriculum is important. To develop integrated curriculum, educators must decide to begin the process, leave behind traditional curriculum planning, struggle, find reward, and share experiences. Overcoming resistance, planning, and identifying interested parties are important steps in curriculum integration. These steps are followed by deciding what form the integration should take, and how, where, and over how much time it should be done. Three frameworks are used to create integrated curriculum: multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary. Teaching strategies used in curriculum integration include themes, projects, problem-based learning, science, and student as researcher. Chapters include: "Exploring the Process,""The Call to Adventure,""Leaving the Past Behind,""The Struggle to Change,""Three Frameworks,""New Beginnings,""Returning to the World," and "Hearing the Next Call." Integrative Learning written by Daniel Blackshields and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-13 with Education categories.

Current teaching, learning and assessment practices can lead students to believe that courses within a programme are self-sufficient and separate. Integrative Learning explores this issue, and considers how intentional learning helps students become integrative thinkers who can see connections in seemingly disparate information, and draw on a wide range of knowledge to make decisions. Written by international contributors who engaged reflectively with their teaching and their students’ learning, the book seeks to develop a shared language of integrative learning, encouraging students to adapt skills learned in one situation to problems encountered in another, and make autonomous connections across courses, between experiences, and throughout their lives. More informed teachers can help students develop the necessary attributes for intentional learning, which include having a sense of purpose, fitting fragmentary information into a ‘learning framework’, understanding something of their own learning processes, asking probing questions, reflecting on their own choices, and knowing when to ask for help. Integrative Learning draws on international research and vast studies to provide the reader with the resources to ensure access to a unified learning experience. The book discusses conceptual and technical tools necessary for facilitating integrative learning across a range of disciplines as well as providing learning pedagogies and considers integrative learning in the context of the relevance of higher education in the complexity and uncertainty of the 21st century. It will appeal to academics and researchers in the field of higher education, as well as those generating higher education curriculums.

Adventures in Fantasy offers an exciting approach to teaching narrative and descriptive writing that stimulates a student’s creativity and imagination. Filled with mini-lessons, reading projects, and hands-on writing activities, the book shows teachers step-by-step how to introduce students to the “magic” of creating a complete story in the fantasy/adventure genre. Before fleshing out their stories, however, students are asked to construct actual maps of their ‘fantasyland’ – and then to write a travelogue describing the setting in vivid detail. This initial fantasizing encourages students to be wildly inventive in creating the drama, ogres, villains, heroes and heroines featured in their story, and on the way they learn about the mythic journey.

Curriculum Integration and Lifelong Education: A Contribution to the Improvement of School Curricula highlights the need to improve the school curriculum from the perspective of lifelong education. Functions, categories, components, and other elements of curriculum integration are discussed, along with different patterns of implementation under the various categories of integration, their objectives, preconditions, conclusions, and implications. A gradually developed, research validated theory of articulation in education is described. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the relationship between lifelong education and curriculum integration, their common purposes, and possible means of mutual support. The discussion then turns to the essential meanings of the concept of curriculum integration and the different ways in which it can be operated; educational purposes served by curriculum integration; and the ways in which curriculum integration affects teaching methods. The principles of integrative learning and the practice of integrative teaching are considered. The effects of integration on school organization and its role in social change are also explored, along with some of the principal problems posed by curriculum integration and its prospects in the educational enterprise. The final chapter evaluates the place of subjects and integration in lifelong education, and views curriculum integration from the larger perspective of integration in life, thus giving it a personal and community focus and not just an educational one. This book is intended primarily for curriculum specialists, educators, and interested researchers.

Flourishing In The Holistic Classroom written by Lisa Marie Tucker and has been published by IAP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-01 with Education categories.

In a time of unprecedented changes globally, Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom offers an educational model that is dynamic, organic, and adaptive. The book offers key principles, dispositions, and practices that holistic educators draw from to create learning environments in which their students can flourish. This book describes learning that is based on a balance of inner and outer ways of knowing, with an emphasis on the inner life or soul of the learner. This is illustrated through accounts of running an arts camp using the inquiry process and experiences with teacher candidates. A key principle of holistic education is connection, which is explored through experiential examples such as connections between learners and each other, the teacher, and their subject of study. The role that mindfulness practice and teacher presence plays in the classroom, as well as working with fear and vulnerability are addressed through detailed narratives. The breadth of the author’s experience including being an early years teacher, a director of programs and exhibits in a children’s museum, and working with pre-service teachers is woven throughout the book. Reflections from former teacher candidates highlight the influence that holistic pedagogy has on learners. The book concludes with an invitation to the reader to embrace a holistic, integrative approach to education, which creates fertile ground for student flourishing. Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom is intended to support teachers, administrators, academics, pre-service teachers and graduate students. Praise for Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom: "Heartfelt, authentic, soulful! Lisa Marie Tucker’s Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom is a gift to all educators. Drawing on her lengthy career as an educator in various roles, Lisa draws on her personal and professional experiences. Her use of the nautilus shell creates a profound holistic image that connects heart, mind and spirit where personal cosmologies are valued. Her work is timely as we emerge from challenging times and seek to (re)situate and (re)connect ourselves to each other and our planet in a post-pandemic world. Her lived journey resonates and inspires, as we, the reader, moves through each chapter. Drawing on the wisdom of ancestral roots, Lisa explores what makes us human in profound ways." Marni Binder Associate Director, Academic Leadership Associate Professor, Ryerson University "I loved this book! Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom by Lisa Tucker is a must-read for any teacher who is looking to make education meaningful, engaging, and relevant to students’ lives. It is highly readable and full of practical examples and applications for teachers at all grade levels. It is also a wonderfully inspiring text for professors working in teacher preparation programs. I felt like I was having a conversation with a master teacher - one who truly understands the really important qualities that teachers can cultivate in their lives and work. I appreciated the way substantive theory was integrated seamlessly into her own personal narrative. Using stories, she brings her Nautilus model of holistic teaching to life, creating an intimacy with the reader that engages your mind and spirit." Sam Crowell Professor Emeritus, California State University Founder, MA in Holistic and Integrative Education Author, Emergent Teaching: A Path of Significance, Creativity and Transformation "Lisa Invites us to imagine, enact and embody wholeheartedly our life as more than surviving - she wants us to flourish in the classroom as learners, no matter if we are wearing a teacher or student hat. To do this we think of ourselves as a whole person whereby heart, mind, body and spirit are embraced. This is what holistic education is. In this book we are taken on a journey and as Lisa says 'teaching is a complex profession and in order for true exploration and deep learning to occur, a healthy, caring, and sustainable learning community must be developed'." Dr Narelle Lemon Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Education Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia
