Lindsay's fourth published novel, 'Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly' was first published in 1926 in the UK and released in the US rather inappropriately as 'Blade for Sale' in the same year. 'Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly' is a humorous adventure set in the France of Louis XIV. Possibly the lightest and least fantastical of David Lindsay's novels, this romp through the realm of the Sun King nevertheless contains moments of high tragedy and tantalising glimpses of Lindsay's fascinating philosophy. Monsieur Gaston de Mailly is a soldier, an adventurer and, above all, a gentleman, trying to combat a disgraceful poverty in the year 1700, in a France where social norms are rapidly changing. An exciting adventure in its own right, this is a book no David Lindsay devotee will want to be without.

In May 1956, aged just 24, Colin Wilson achieved success and overnight fame with his philosophical study of alienation and transcendence in modern literature and thought, The Outsider. Fifty-four years on, and never out of print in English, the book is still widely read and discussed, having been translated into over thirty languages. In a remarkably prolific career, Wilson, a true polymath, has since written over 170 titles: novels, plays and non-fiction on a variety of subjects. This volume brings together twenty essays by scholars of Colin Wilson's work worldwide and is published in his honour to mark the author's 80th birthday. Each contributor has provided an essay on their favourite Wilson book (or the one they consider to be the most significant). The result is a varied and stimulating assessment of Wilson's writings on philosophy, psychology, literature, criminology and the occult with critical appraisals of four of his most thought-provoking novels. Altogether a fitting tribute to a writer

The two strangers remained standing by the door, which was closed quietly behind them. They seemed to be waiting for the mild sensation caused by their appearance to subside before advancing into the room. Maskull was a kind of giant, but of broader and more robust physique than most giants. He wore a full beard. His features were thick and heavy, coarsely modelled, like those of a wooden carving; but his eyes, small and black, sparkled with the fires of intelligence and audacity. His hair was short, black, and bristling. Night-spore was of middle height, but so tough-looking that he appeared to be trained out of all human frailties and susceptibilities. His hairless face seemed consumed by an intense spiritual hunger, and his eyes were wild and distant. Both men were dressed in tweeds. Before any words were spoken, a loud and terrible crash of falling masonry caused the assembled party to start up from their chairs in consternation. It sounded as if the entire upper part of the building had collapsed. Faull sprang to the door, and called to the servant to say what was happening. The man had to be questioned twice before he gathered what was required of him. He said he had heard nothing. In obedience to his master's order, he went upstairs. Nothing, however, was amiss there, neither had the maids heard anything. In the meantime Backhouse, who almost alone of those assembled had preserved his sangfroid, went straight up to Nightspore, who stood gnawing his nails. "Perhaps you can explain it, sir?" "It was supernatural," said Nightspore, in a harsh, muffled voice, turning away from his questioner. "I guessed so. It is a familiar phenomenon, but I have never heard it so loud.."

This carefully crafted ebook: "The Haunted Woman" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Isabel Loment, engaged to the ordinary and unexceptional Marshall Stokes, leads a peripatetic existence as the ward of her aunt, Ann Moor. Their travels take them to the downlands of Sussex, to Runhill Court, an ancient home owned by Henry Judge. There Isabel discovers a strange staircase few can see, which leads upwards to three doors. She chooses one, which opens onto a room that appears to exist only part of the time; what might lie behind the other doors remains a mystery. In the room she reencounters Judge. There they find new insights and are able to express themselves in new ways, but are unable to recall what has transpired there when they leave... David Lindsay was an author now best remembered for the philosophical science fiction novel A Voyage to Arcturus. The secret of Lindsay's originality as a novelist lies in his metaphysical assumptions.

In Sphinx, Nicholas Cabot has come to a countryhouse called Mereway where he plans to work on a machine he has invented that records dreams. He encounters a family with three marriageable daughters, and takes refuges from them in the company of some neighbors, including the calculating Celia Hantish and the well-known composer Lore Jensen, who has written a tune called "Sphinx" which hints at the riddle of existence. Meanwhile as Cabot experiments with his machine, he finds that dreams give access to a deeper meaning of life.
