1930: A few kilometers from the medieval headquarters of the knights Templar in Cyprus, an enigmatic Englishman uncovers a dazzling round object from the remains of an ancient Latin church and vanishes alongside it. A quarter of a century later, a farmer excavates nearby a huge earthen jar with bizarre engravings on its surface. A scholar with local roots undertakes to dig into the matter further and naively sets off a sequence of treacherous events. When he realizes that ancient artefacts and early Christian scripture fetch millions on the black market, his life is already in grave danger. Chased through the tunnels of London's Underground, he escapes to his native Cyprus only to find himself in the wolf's den. His survival now depends on putting together the pieces of a historical puzzle stretching over one thousand years that takes him back to a time when faith, power and treasure joined with crime and intrigue to determine the destiny of the world. Will he be able to decipher history's intriguing enigmas and the secrets of the Knights Templar and Lusignan dynasty's Royal Order of the Sword, which continued for centuries to operate in the background? Where did the poor Latin refugees of Jerusalem released by Sultan Saladin in 1187 finally settle down? What was the sacred legacy of the Knights Templar? What was the content and purpose of the occult rites they indulge in at night? What happened to the huge treasure they had transferred to their Cypriot HQ to finance the next crusade? What was king Peter I of Cyprus searching for in the 3 days he occupied Alexandria in 1365? How did he gain the support of the Pope? Why did Queen Catherine Cornaro and many of her subjects burst into tears in 1489 when they saw her leaving for Venice? What happened to the descendants of the Lusignan dynasty of Cyprus and to their accumulated wealth? What was the royal family's relationship with the Orthodox Church and the Tsar of Russia? When did they die out? Why was Archbishop Kyprianos of Cyprus not very enthusiastic about the Greek revolution of 1821? What did he do with the 600,000 piastres he had appropriated from the private chest of his deceased treasurer in November 1820?

The island of Sicily was a highly contested area throughout much of its history. Among the first to exert strong influence on its political, cultural, infrastructural, and demographic developments were the two major decentralized civilizations of the first millennium BCE: the Phoenicians and the Greeks. While trade and cultural exchange preceded their permanent presence, it was the colonizing movement that brought territorial competition and political power struggles on the island to a new level. The history of six centuries of colonization is replete with accounts of conflict and warfare that include cross-cultural confrontations, as well as interstate hostilities, domestic conflicts, and government violence. This book is not concerned with realities from the battlefield or questions of military strategy and tactics, but rather offers a broad collection of archaeological case studies and historical essays that analyze how political competition, strategic considerations, and violent encounters substantially affected rural and urban environments, the island’s heterogeneous communities, and their social practices. These contributions, originating from a workshop in 2018, combine expertise from the fields of archaeology, ancient history, and philology. The focus on a specific time period and the limited geographic area of Greek Sicily allows for the thorough investigation and discussion of various forms of organized societal violence and their consequences on the developments in society and landscape.

A timely and academically-significant contribution to scholarship on community, identity, and globalization in the Roman and Hellenistic worlds Community and Identity at the Edges of the Classical World examines the construction of personal and communal identities in the ancient world, exploring how globalism, multi-culturalism, and other macro events influenced micro identities throughout the Hellenistic and Roman empires. This innovative volume discusses where contact and the sharing of ideas was occurring in the time period, and applies modern theories based on networks and communication to historical and archaeological data. A new generation of international scholars challenge traditional views of Classical history and offer original perspectives on the impact globalizing trends had on localized areas—insights that resonate with similar issues today. This singular resource presents a broad, multi-national view rarely found in western collected volumes, including Serbian, Macedonian, and Russian scholarship on the Roman Empire, as well as on Roman and Hellenistic archaeological sites in Eastern Europe. Topics include Egyptian identity in the Hellenistic world, cultural identity in Roman Greece, Romanization in Slovenia, Balkan Latin, the provincial organization of cults in Roman Britain, and Soviet studies of Roman Empire and imperialism. Serving as a synthesis of contemporary scholarship on the wider topic of identity and community, this volume: Provides an expansive materialist approach to the topic of globalization in the Roman world Examines ethnicity in the Roman empire from the viewpoint of minority populations Offers several views of metascholarship, a growing sub-discipline that compares ancient material to modern scholarship Covers a range of themes, time periods, and geographic areas not included in most western publications Community and Identity at the Edges of the Classical World is a valuable resource for academics, researchers, and graduate students examining identity and ethnicity in the ancient world, as well as for those working in multiple fields of study, from Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman historians, to the study of ethnicity, identity, and globalizing trends in time.

Temples And Sanctuaries In The Roman East written by Arthur Segal and has been published by Oxbow Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-31 with Architecture categories.

This lavishly illustrated volume presents a comprehensive architectural study of 87 individual temples and sanctuaries built in the Roman East between the end of the 1st century BCE and the end of the 3rd century CE, within a broad region encompassing the modern states of Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan. Religious architecture gave faithful expression to the complexity of the Roman East and to its multiplicity of traditions pertaining to ethnic and religious aspects as well as to the powerful influence of Imperial Rome. The source of this power lay in the uniformity of the architectural language, the inventory of forms, the choice of styles and the spatial layout of the buildings. Thus, while temples have an eclectic character, there is an underlying unity of form comprising the podium, the stairway between the terminating walls (antae) and the columns along the entrance front - in other words, the axiality, frontality and symmetry of the temple as viewed from outside. The temples and sanctuaries studied in this volume demonstrate individual nuances of plan, spatial design, location in the sanctuary and interrelations with the immediate vicinity but can be divided into two main categories: Vitruvian temples (derived from Hellenistic-Roman architecture) and Non-Vitruvian temples (those with plans and spatial designs that cannot be analysed according to architectural criteria such as those defined by Vitruvius). The individual descriptions presented focus solely upon the analysis of the external and internal space of the temples of all types and do not involve any cultural or ethnic discussion.
