Excerpt from Aes Signatum The literary tradition in regard to the first issue of money by the Romans has unmistakably been a controlling influence over those who have associated these bars with the monetary system of Rome, whether they have held them to be examples of the early aes signatum or an echo of that enigmatical coinage issued in later times. For if we take into consideration how recalcitrant the bars have proved at every attempt to account for types and fix the monetary function of those varieties that plainly belong to a late period when Rome was issuing coins properly so called, we are almost compelled to conclude that without being preju diced by the literary tradition no numismatist would have thought of re garding them as money, much less as coins. Excerpt from Coins of the Roman Republic in the British Museum, Vol. 1 of 3: Aes Rude, Aes Signatum, Aes Grave, and Coinage of Rome From B. C. 268 The classification instituted by Count de Salis necessitated copious notes throughout in justification of the sequence of the issues. It was also necessary to furnish separate introductory chapters to the various sections of the coinages which were struck outside the capital and in the Provinces. The Introduction proper treats mainly of the coinage of the Roman mint. Descriptions with illustrations of coins not in the National Collection have been given, when considered necessary for the classification. Money In Classical Antiquity written by Sitta von Reden and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-18 with History categories.

This book was the first to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the impact of money on the economy, society and culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. It uses new approaches in economic history to explore how money affected the economy in antiquity and demonstrates that the crucial factors in its increasing influence were state-formation, expanding political networks, metal supply and above all an increasing sophistication of credit and contractual law. Covering a wide range of monetary contexts within the Mediterranean over almost a thousand years (c.600 BC–AD 300), it demonstrates that money played different roles in different social and political circumstances. The book will prove an invaluable introduction to upper-level students of ancient money, while also offering perspectives for future research to the specialist.

This book offers a full picture of the elephant in the Graeco-Roman world, featuring contemporary accounts of elephants performing on the battlefield. The author first traces the natural history of the elephant and then evaluates the references to elephants in the works of Ctesias, Aristotle, and other early writers. He shows the animal in action under Alexander the Great and his successors, under the Carthaginians, and under Hannibal, describing how they were captured and trained and how they were dealt with by opposing armies. He discusses what later writers such as Pliny, Aelian, and Ammianus knew about elephants, and he concludes with an account of the animals' roles in such peacetime activities as circuses and ceremonies.--From publisher's description.

Property And Wealth In Classical Sparta written by Stephen Hodkinson and has been published by Classical Press of Wales this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-31 with Business & Economics categories.

The standard image of Sparta is of an egalitarian, military society which disdained material possessions. Yet property and wealth played a critical role in her history. Classical Sparta's success rested upon a compromise between rich and poor citizens. Economic differences were masked by a uniform lifestyle and a communal sharing of resources. Over time, however, increasing inequalities led to a plutocratic society and to the decline of Spartan power. Using an innovative combination of historical, archaeological and sociological methods, Stephen Hodkinson challenges traditional views of Sparta's isolation from general Greek culture. This volume is the first major monograph-length discussion of a subject on which the author is recognised as the leading international authority.
